I remember someone on here (billy hardball?) making a thread about replacing the battery in a 3g or 4g ipod and it all seemed pretty easy... but has anyone on here done it with a 5g video model? If so, is it much the same procedure? Where can you get the batteries? I noticed they're not on jaycar.

cheers.

edit - oops.. jaycar does have 5g batteries now.. but has anyone here done it?

Can the same be done for replacing a cracked screen? Ipod still works with no screen :(

Pretty sure there is no such thing as a 5 gig iPod.

5g as in 5th generation. ie. "ipod with video". It's a 30 gig ipod.

Ahhhh I see. I don't think it should be too much different. The hardest part is separating the halves. If you're willing to cop a bit of damage (and it should only be a BIT) then i reckon you can do it. Google the batteries that are used and you should be able to pick up something better from JayCar. They have the whole kit with the batteries.

Yeah i'm hoping it shouldn't be too tricky. My only cause for concern really is that I think everything is a little more compact and fiddly in the video one compared to the one you have. It has a smaller battery and hard drive and the wire connecting the battery is more fragile. I think the opening procedure should be the same though.. as the battery comes with the same tools as yours.

Might have to just give it a go heh.. it's gonna die eventually anyway.

You should also think about upgrading your HDD if you're going to have it open anyway. I think 80G ones are about $90.

Oh yeah.. hadn't thought about that. Although are the bigger hard drives the same size physically? I don't know what they are like now but when the 5g pods first came out the 60gb model wsa thicker than the 30gb one.. though that could have been also because the 60gb one has a bigger battery. I wonder if this still holds true.

i took a couple of pictures but it was over so quickly that i had the thing back together before I took any more. Might post the pictures up later on tho.

Basically i just followed this video straight up http://www.ipodhowtovideo.com/video/videobattreplacement.html

The case comes apart for me nowhere near as easy as it does in that vid and i monged up the plastic tools (same as billy's) pretty hard but didnt have to resort to a knife or anything. Once its open its a breeze.. just detatch the existing cable, pry the old battery off of it's glue and put the new one in its place.

Might be able to find screens cheaper somewhere, I've seen some on ebay too.. although the vid tutes on that site are definitely pretty helpful.
