Telstra says it may have to install temporary mobile phone towers in Sydney's west to replace ones which were damaged overnight when a man went on a rampage in a restored army tank.

The man led police on a 90-minute chase through a number of suburbs.

Police are alleging that the 45-year-old destroyed six phone towers and damaged an electricity sub-station.

Police Chief Inspector Guy Haberley says the man then led officers on a long, but slow, chase through a number of suburbs in Sydney's west.

"Mount Druitt highway patrol followed the vehicle at an approximate speed of 30 kilometres an hour at all times," he said.

I love it when tanks go on rampage... the cops are completely unprepared.

Has anybody ever let loose with their massive cannon though? They always just seem to drive around then give up.

no CHUB no ones fired the cannon as most of the time it's just one nut job and to fire the cannon is a lengthy process.

all though it would be lol if they did.

I would of assumed a tank would just roll over a bunch of sandbags?

If I'm wrong, meh, seems pretty strange and that wouldn't be common knowledge.

Well you are wrong, maybe if you read the thread a few times you will realise why.

I don't see why he should, are you just taking what clint and mission said as fact without actually knowing? I've seen heaps of footage of tanks scooting around sandy desert fields and dunes with no trouble whatsoever and I don't see how a tank couldn't drive over some sandbags, let alone how the police would be supposed to get a huge supply of sandbags at 2am and somehow put them down in such a manner that it stopped this guy from driving the tank around.

Hrmm wasn't this tank on the news a few days ago.

Some war buff bought them years back and restored it.
Cost like $100,000?
Then bought a second one.
They're outfitted with some crazy I.C.E

There's the black one seen in photo and a red one.

I think it was on EXTRA or something just as cheesey.

I looked up the current mobile faults at work last night and found the aftermath of this one - multiple sites that read "No power due to transformer being buried under rubble" or "offline due to vandalism". Was kind of hoping it'd be "Offline due to maniac in tank crashing into it" or something to that effect..

Explain how sandbags stop a tank yet they roll around in the desert, in the.... sand.. most of the time ? I would have said the same.
