I did a little Googling this morning on PS3 prices...
All for the 60G edition Hong Kong, HK$3780 - 577 aud Japan, 67780 yen - 656 aud America, us $574 - 685 aud France, 512,00 EUR - 814 aud England, £399.99 (with HDMI cable and bluray disc) - 941 aud Australia, au $997 Its the same hardware just with region locks ... WTF ? And they talk about petrol stations price gouging ? |

Can't you buy both a Wii and an XBox360 for roughly the same price?

Can't you buy both a Wii and an XBox360 for roughly the same price? But then you can't wave around your shiny e-peen saying "I HAVE A PS3" |

how do the wii and 360 compare across the regions? I bet we're getting screwed over with those too :) This is just the way it is and always has been, and not just for consoles, but for DVDs, music, games, PC components, car parts, etc.

New Zealand and I think Ireland are actually even worse off than us with the price/currency conversion.

Unfortunately there's just no decent ones for the PS3 around yet. It's probably worth pointing out that the PS3 is region free with games though. |

Sony are probably pissed at AUS after getting smacked in court over the mod-chips. Thats why the PS3 is region free, they didn't want to give people an excuse to mod-chip their new box.

I was under the impression that Sony was still losing money on the PS3 units even at such a high price.

It's looking more and more like BluRay is going to win the format wars, Blockbuster have announced they're only going to be renting bluray discs on top of JB Hifi and Myer only selling BluRay. A friend also mentioned today that apparently Fox have signed on as the distributor for the Halo movie, whats funny about that is that Fox only release stuff on BluRay which I'm sure is going to piss Microsoft off to no end.
You never know, pron might save the day and pull hd dvd through. |

I am not sure what Bluray has to do with PS3 prices being to high here...
If anything it should make anyone that reads this thread go "no f***ing way am I buying BluRay". "JB Hifi and Myer" yeah that sucks for the end users, but that said I don't shop at either. As for the MS comment, I was under the impression they were going to support both platforms ? Also ... Learn to read. 1. Blockbuster America (who knows what Blockbuster Australia will do) 2. "HD DVD titles will continue to be offered on-line and in the 250 (out of 1,450) stores" Besides. High Def static media ? to me it is a huge "who cares" 1. HD movie purchases currently represent only 0.1 per cent of the $242 million spent in the DVD movie category in Australia. 2. How many people have high def ? Buba and 1 of my co-workers are the only 2 people I know of that have a true high-def setup. I am sure other people I know do, but I just haven't seen it. My DVD collection isn't going anywhere. I purchased a DVD player very early on (pre ps2, when they cost $600/$700) yet am not at all interested in the HD options ? The whole war is self defeating, it only makes people wonder "is this the right thing to buy ? or should I wait". But as a side note. LG's is working on a dual-format Blu-ray/HD-DVD player and Warner Bros' have been working development of a dual-format distribution disc. ps. I am anti BluRay, only because I am anti Sony. |

Why not write a letter, send it to the ACCC and copy Michael Epharim @ Sony so he can come out with a great comment defending the pricing, something like "we at sony use a fixed exchange rate, so head office can bank lots of ca$h!"
Seriously tho, whomever said its as bad as petrol companies is right. Pricing in our region should be consistent (roughly singapore/HK levels) so gouging they are. |

"JB Hifi and Myer" yeah that sucks for the end users, but that said I don't shop at either. As for the MS comment, I was under the impression they were going to support both platforms ? It's been pretty well documented that Microsoft is in the HD DVD camp, if they were in both then they would release an external BluRay drive for the xbox360 as well I would imagine, also I believe Vista is very HD DVD friendly from what I understand. I've never seen anything saying they support BluRay but if you have come across anything post away. Regardless of where you shop at JB/Myer or not, JB at least is a massive market to be cutting HD DVD out of, don't know what the JB's are like up in QLD but any one you walk into in Melbourne always seems to be totally packed. Also ... Learn to read. I'm aware that article is aimed at the American Blockbuster, I did read the article and was nearly going to mention the HD DVD online part but figured there's no point in restating everything in the article, anyone interested would have gone and read that page themselves anyway. If the Blockbuster franchise is anything like EB then anything that happens in the American chain will filter through to the Australian stores end of story, they don't get any say in it. Besides. Of course the ppl that are capable of making full use of HD content (e.g. already owning a 1080p screen) are going to be the one's that take up these new media's first and that at this stage is a very small percentage of the population. DVD was out for a fair while before it was really embraced it as a mainstream format, it's still early days for HD DVD and BluRay at the moment, and may take longer than DVD to pick up simply because most people that don't know much about either format will hold off to see which one comes out on top. For that very reason, imo a hybrid solution needs to be offered to the consumer market to make things easier for the average punter but I believe thats been in the works for some time now anyway which of course you already mentioned. My DVD collection isn't going anywhere. I purchased a DVD player very early on (pre ps2, when they cost $600/$700) yet am not at all interested in the HD options ? Well even if you upgrade to a hi def player down the track, your dvd collection still doesn't have to go anywhere... lets just say for arguments sake you got a PS3 (i know you're against Sony, I've never really been a big fan of there's either), anyway, the latest PS3 firmware update supports DVD upscaling which makes your average dvd look far better. The whole war is self defeating, it only makes people wonder "is this the right thing to buy ? or should I wait". Yeah, I totally agree there... at the end of the day hybrid players will be the way to go then the media distributors can fight it out amongst themselves about getting the rights to movies for their format and leave the end consumer out of a war that shouldn't effect them. I think it's f***ed that this situation was allowed to arise in the first place after the beta/vhs war 25yrs ago but such is life. |

its hardly a format war, more of a consumer s*** off. and from my understanding microsoft dont really back either format, the hd-dvd player was an add on purchase if you wanted it, and to my understanding they are bringing out a bluray player aswell. which is fantastic for people who keep there dvd/media player and game consoles seperate, cause it s***ted me to tears when i had 4 things plugged into my tv that played dvds when i didnt want them too.

Umm well this article suggests otherwise but if you have anything more recent, I'd love to read it. Maybe the term "format war" is all media hype but just about any article you read regarding the 2 formats refers to it as that. last edited by Nailbomb at 19:30:20 19/Jun/07 |
