You know if you pre-breathe oxygen you can last several minutes longer underwater... learnt from Penn & Teller... they do a lot of underwater tricks

ya breath in as much as possible, then breathe it out as much as you can until you cant breathe out no more, then in again.
And its in through nose and out through mouth i think.

a guy at my school died trying to do that, he was seeing how many laps he could hold his breath underwater for, this was about year 2000. apparently if u hyperventilate and fill yourself with too much oxygen, your body/brain doesnt know when to tell you to surface because you need the CO2 as an indicator. sounds like pretty dodgy science, but still scary that this guy blacked out from it and drowned :(

omfg av!!!!
Well, he held his breath for just over 3 minutes, which my dad used to be able to do easy. He is a tuba player and used to practice holding his breath for playing at the chandler pool. Swim down to the bottom of the diving pool and held his breath, his record was 4 and a half minutes.

In saying this, he wasn't moving constantly like that dude was, and didn't have to go down anywhere near as far.

Needs more Spear on Fish action.

Pretty cool to dive that deep unassisted, but that clip is quite boring.

hyperventilate and fill yourself with too much oxygen

yeah hyperventilating is really a waste of time, your blood cells can't actually bind anymore oxygen than in normal breathing. what you are doing is scrubbing your blood of CO2. what that does is raise the ph of your blood considerably. you actually don't need to breathe as often as you do to get the enough oxygen. breathing is more to regulate CO2 and therefore ph of the blood. co2 is kept within a certain range so that ph can be rapidly corrected with just a couple of breaths.

hyperventilating doesn't actually give you more oxygen to dive longer, but it forces the blood ph up and in the process reduces the subconscious desire to breath. when you dive your ph drops, and the desire to breath becomes stronger and stronger, eventually you just automatically take a breath and thats not something you want to do underwater.

if i remember correctly, when you hyperventilate you actually reduce the amount of oxygen getting to your brain. it also does some really horrible things to your heart as well and i think can bring about an arrest.

its a pretty dumb thing to do really.

there's a fkn massive different between holding your breath underwater and then holding your breath, actually moving which uses more energy and then going into higher pressure water.
