Hi2u.
What codec packs are people using these days? Trying to get avi etc. to work on this computer and nothing seems to gogo. Plays .wmv fine, it WAS playing .avi but it sounded like the sound was going into a fan - Figured it was codecs so pulled em down and reinstalled divX pack, FFDshow and tried KLite packs now can'[t open any avi at all (get codec error).. Cheers. |

ffdshow, if that isnt working u probably have some conflict with other s*** packs that are still on there.
I also play pretty much everything in media player classic if all else fails use vlc I just reloaded my tv box and all I installed was 1) ffdshow 2) quicktime alternative (with MPC bundled) Choose MPC to play all forms of video and I haven't had anything that won't play yet. last edited by rubba-chikin at 21:37:19 15/May/07 |

The only thing I dislike about VLC is when you install it all media icons turn into orange cones when they are associated.

Get codec error with FFDshow and MP.
Media Player Classis does some weird buffering thing which it didnt do before i started stuffing around - which was trying to fix the sound... Is there an easy way to nuke all installed codecs and start again without uninstalling each individual codec pack? (have tried that but don't know if there's any strange codecs installed that might be conflicting). Cheers. |

Way to answer his question guys.
Format Loki, it's the only way. Alternatively, find out where they are installed and manually delete them. |

1) get ffdshow
2) get gspot and find out exactly what codec the file uses 3) go into ffdshow options and turn that codec on optional 4) get qt/ra alternatives if needed. srsly. any idiots that tell you you need to use a specific media player (vlc) are tosspots, any directshow player will work fine following the 3/4 steps above. don't install any other codec packs, because they really are bloated crap. |

If the PC has already had eleventy billion different codec packs installed to try and fix the problem blindly it can be almost impossible to fix short of an OS reload.
VLC uses its own embedded codecs so its perfect for a temporary fix. |

I made the switch to VLC a while back and f***, it's awesome. It just plays everything. |

Yes it's all fast and unbloated but where's the full screen controls? If you turn on "always on top" and put it into full screen mode you get the video full screen with the controls in a separate little window always being on top and getting in the way of the picture(try it you'll see what I mean). To me VLC's default interface just seems unfinished/beta material. |

I have KL Codec pack and VLC. They're both pretty good, the only thing I can really fault VLC for is the lack of Realmedia support.

Ended up going through
control panel --> sounds and audio devices --. hardware tab --> video codecs --> properties --> removed all listed. reinstalled FFDShow and QA, worked after that. Which would appear to be the easy way to nuke all installed codecs (aside from those with uninstall options) O.o last edited by Loki at 17:36:34 17/May/07 |

I tried to make the switch to VLC, I really did, but after a while I grew to hate the interface to it ditto.. some genius decided to load it as the default viewer on my work machine. after fiddling around with the Geexbox Media Player again recently, I can't help but wonder why there isn't just some gerenic provider of codecs out on the net that your everyday players (vlc, MPC, WinAMP, whatever) can just connect to and get the codec you need then and there MS MP can do it.. but it'll only get MS sanctioned codecs. Geexbox does it flawlessly, all from a live cd (haven't tried mkv format yet though) last edited by koopz at 23:14:28 17/May/07 |
