Remember those rumours about Blizzard unveiling a new game at the event they're holding in Korea on the 19th of may?

Well, turns out it might be another MMO....

The long-rumoured new instalment of Blizzard's massive StarCraft series is set to be unveiled later this month - and it's another massively-multiplayer online game in the style of World of Warcraft, CVG can reveal.

Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the StarCraft MMO will be unveiled at an upcoming Blizzard event on May 19 in South Korea - the epicentre of the sci-fi RTS series' rabid fandom.

duh, what is WoW? $30 a month? (I have nfi) multiplied by the millions of idiots who play it and you've got yourself a constant stream of millions each month. (maybe some slight over exaggerations in there)

Is about what I thought too - It'd be awesome to see another SC RTS come out & one can't wonder if blizz is taking the cheap/easy route with a SC MMO (If it's in fact for real) to get all cashed up.

Let's face it - there's a whole horde of WoW players out there who'd quite happily play both at once. Scary really

got to realise that if a WoS comes out i would think that they would be losing wow subscribers to WOS at nearly a 1:1 ratio, (with wos being a new game, new engine)

I still play Starcraft most days (and follow the Korean proleagues)... no RTS has come along since that is 1/10th the game.

You Blizzard are noobs. If you want alien sci-fi MMORPG, just make up some generic races and crap... then get working on bloody Starcraft RTS.

But nah, I'm well aware they're hiring for an MMO project, and while it would make more sense they were making a Diablo MMO, the fact that they're doing the launch in Korea means all things point to Starcraft.

Um, are you guys forgetting that Vivendi owns Blizzard now? Blizzard might not have had any say in the deal. I heard somewhere that Vivendi wants to make an MMO of all of Blizzard's big franchises. It could also just be fake, so that when they announce a Starcraft RTS everybody will be relieved and happy.

I'd probably (ok, certainly) play a StarCraft mmo, even if it was just WoW in space. That said I'd likely drop it faster than I dropped WoW if it didn't offer much new in terms of gameplay. Would be a lot happier for a new RTS though. Random thought: maybe Blizzard could do something revolutionary for once and create some sort of MMO-RTS hybrid.

That would be kind of killer, but Bliz don't seem to do a lot of experimental or ground-breaking stuff though. Their releases are generally playable, polished and popular, but just not very original.

I'd have to agree with Hogfather's previous post. Blizzard takes existing ideas and perfects them.

As for that video, it's entirely fake. IIRC that's gameplay from a player made SC mod for W3TFT that basically has all teh SC units and some campaigns etc. Looks kinda fun.

EDIT: OOPS! On closer inspection I remembered that that's a C&C: Generals mod.

Yeh sniffed around a bit and its fake :( Looks cool tho and a lot of effort obviously went into it!

This entire rumour is pretty much based on the fact that Blizzard had a job advertisement on their website looking for people to work on a "next-gen" MMO. It then got combined with the rumours that Blizzard would be announcing a new Starcraft game soon, and hey presto, Starcraft MMO.

Personally, I think it more likely is that the "next-gen" MMO is going to be a console version of WoW and the new game they're announcing is something completely different.

They've stated multiple times that WoW won't be heading to consoles.. So I somehow doubt this'll be the case, nor would they do something as silly as releasing a second, seperate version of WoW designed to run on the PS3/XB360/Wii.

Personally, I'm still holding out for SC: Ghost :(

Wasn't there a port of EverQuerst to the PlayStation? I think they had canned text messages or something, it wasn't that popular.

There's a lot of talk about the conference in South Korea on May 19. There's numerous reports that Bliz are gonna announce a new title in development there, and the choice of location for the announcement is what people are pointing at as basis for the "its StarCraft!" rumours.

Combined with the ad for the MMO developer and you've got the basis for a pending World of StarCraft release.

I think I saw somewhere that one of their honchos has confirmed that they have three undisclosed projects in secret development at the moment, so there's certainly room for a lot of possibilities. Maybe with the humongous cash cow that's been WoW we might get more then one Bliz game every five years?

My money is on them mentioning a new Star Craft game in Korea since it's insanely popular there.

i would prefer another starcraft rts myself but i confess i would play world of starcraft if you could be a zerg. if that is really what they are doing i think it would make more money than warcraft does now a month

At least one of their three undisclosed games will be a WoW expansion, you can bank on that.

Maybe they just think they can hook all the crazy koreans into paying $30 a month, now that almost half the rest of the world do.

I'm hoping their going to announce a Starcraft mod that lets you run it in something higher than 640x480 .. it does not look pretty on today's huge-o-widescreen LCDs.
