so i want a travel laptop with wifi and decent hard drive size must have a decent battery and not too big so it can fit in a day bag and shizzle

I use a HP nc4200 which I find is really handy for carting around with me. It's using a 12" screen and only weighs about 1.8kg's so I keep it in a bookbag which I can slide into my backpack. They're a discontinued line now but i think they still retail for a fair bit. You can normally pick them up off ebay between 1,000 - 1,500. There's one listed on ebay here which isn't bad, the hdd is only 40Gb but laptop hdd's are pretty cheap these days so that can be upgraded very easily.

That not only means new options, but the older models might drop a bit in price.

I'd look at Sony, Fujitsu, Asus, HP and IBM. Not Dell... :P

Its an Intel GMA950, the card in most notebooks.

Its also the standard card that ships with the Dell.

i just get an old dell through work (D610) and its awesome

its my work station and my media box at home

enough grunt at work to run all our environments

awesome vid card i can game with (ati x300, none of this shared/integrated s***, i woudlnt touch that with a 10 ft pole)

wireless works awesome, decent size keyboard, dunno about battery life, coz i never use it on battery, but everything else it does, doesnt s*** me

If you want to be able to play some games on it and want a go 7 series solution Asus have a few that aren't bad.

I am toying with going overseas for a while, like 6-12 months. What appealed to me was to still be able to play some games half decently (COH is pretty much all I play atm) but not have a massive screen which defeats the whole purpose of having a notebook imo.

ASUS A8JS has a go7700 video with a 14" widescreen lcd which is probably what I'd go for.

I'd prefer a 13.3" screen notey but they only seem to come in the go7400 flavours :(

I am way out of it when it comes to vid cards, last time I had half a idea (other than pay more = better) povo people had TNT2 M64s! Is the Go 7400 heaps s***tier than the 7700?

It wouldnt be heaps s***ter, itd be similar to the difference in performance between the desktop cards 7900GT/7900GTX and the 8800GTS/8800GTX I'd expect.

Obviously they aren't going to be as powerful at the 7900 range cause they are mobile and can't run as hot. It'd be nice to see an 8600 mobile range cause they are doing quite well.

Edit: After googling around a bit it seems the 7400 is pretty s***e.

The 7700 on the other hand is roughly equivalent to the performance you'd get out of a 7600GT in a desktop system.

They have a 7900GTX SLI notebook! I wonder how long the battery life lasts playing a game... 10 mins? :P

Dual HDD capability too so you can have RAID setup in a notebook.

Alienware sure have some cool s*** there, I for one am impressed. Although they still don't offer anything kickass in small form factor. Thats the only negative I can see.

Interesting. I was going to buy one recently but now I think I'll wait. Do you have a source? Also, do you know the approximate release date for these new models?

Also, my Dell Inspiron 4000 turns 6 this year and it still works fine. It now only plays DVDs and not CDs as well though.

So I would recommend a Dell. Which is why I'll be buying another Dell laptop if I can get around to committing to the purchase.

They're like the complete opposite of each other.

I don't like Dell because compared to say HP, Toshiba, IBM, Fujitsu, Sony, they're s*** quality. They are not the "fastest" notebooks around either. Dell's aren't THAT bad, but I personally wouldn't touch one with a 10ft pole.

You guys harp on about them cause thats all you've ever used... obviously. Toshiba and Dell are worlds apart. Toshiba is an expensive brand, who make quality notebooks that are reliable, but not fast. Dell make crappy, cheap notebooks that aren't fast either.

If you want good quality, you buy Japanese notebooks, Fujitsu or Sony.

IBM and HP s*** over Dell for build quality and reliability.

Asus s*** over everyone for Quality + Value for Money.

Also, Hogfather, differences between your priced XPS1210 and the Fujitsu I linked to...

a) Fujitsu are made in Japan, and OOZE quality.
b) Its a 13.3" versus the 12.1" dell.
c) It comes with a Bag + Port Replicator + Mouse
d) Has a fingerprint reader.
e) ITS LIGHTER, DESPITE HAVING A BIGGER SCREEN WTF?

Muh, your entitled to your opinion mongie, Im just basing mine of repairing them, using them and supporting them, not just selling them for 4 years at office works, no disrespect indended there at all, I simply mean that there is a difference between selling them and seeing them in a store to actually using them hours at a time in a real world enviroment.

That was Dell, Toshiba, HP, Compaq, NEC, Sony and Asus

I havnt had a chance to use a Fujitsu yet.-

Had my Inspiron 6400 for just under a year and it's superb. My 8600 and 8000 are still in good use and are working wonders so I really can't complain about Dell since I've been using them for 5+ years.

I've got an ASUS and its f***ing tops.

1500 for a good alienware one.

Depends on the game I suppose - the Dell XPS models are probably one of the better choices for gaming.

In saying that, I spent $1800 (had a bunch of Dell dollar discounts and vouchers) on a my Inspiron 6400 (Dual Core 1.8Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 60Gb SATA HDD, ATI x1400 and dual layer DVD burner) and it runs everything I need it to play (WoW, ET, OpenArena).
