hey guys.
basically, my home computer setup is BPA cable on 10gig, thru a netgear router, into 3 computers, my dads, mine, and my sisters my sister is constantly downloading new video clips, but my dad is f***ing stubborn and wont believe me when i show him all this newly downloaded s*** on her computer, he basically will only believe if we catch her in the action. the reason behind this is she is putting us over 10g every month. so, i was wondering, is there a program that monitors how much bandwitdh your entire network is using thru your internet connection? by logic i am thinking this would be a fairly hard thing to do from 1 stand alone computer on a network.. but hopefully there is something. basically i wanna show dad the IP of where the bandwidth is comin from, and show that its her. ty thx |

iv just done some googlign and 99% of the programs im finding are just measuring the s*** going in and coming out from my network card.
i need one that i can run on my pc that can read everything coming and going thru the router and to the specific ip's |

Might be easier to install logging software on her machine, and collect the info after a week or so? Depends what model of netgear it is, as to how easily you can check up on usage data, since they tend to have different management features.

Pity you don't have a router capable of running DDWRT, it has a thing called RFLOW collector that can determine how much each computer on the network downloads/uploads.
Just install analogx netstat live on her pc, reset the counters at the start of the month & let it count how much she downloads. There's some other similar utilities but I don't know what they are. I think you may also be able to do it through SNMP if your router has that (failing ddwrt firmware), I looked into it a while ago but stuffed if I could figure it out. |

Also netlimiter seems to have a traffic chart than can differentiate between local network and internet traffic.

You could run something like Ethereal on your PC; it'll capture all the data and then you'll need to analyse it somehow.

I dont think analysis is pete's high point. Getting anal, that's a different story.

Ethereal wouldn't be of any use if you're running a switched network, since the switch would only send on traffic directed towards your own MAC address.
If you were running something like a linux box with ipchains or iptables, or a BSD/OSX box using ipfw, you could probably get all the traffic info you're asking for. |

Download and install a program that keeps track of how much you download in a week/month. Do the same for your Dads computer. Add them up and the left over will be whatever your sister is downloading. Your dad should be happy with that, unless he is the one downloading heaps of pron ;P

Install SNMP on all your computers, and graph network card usage using cacti:
http://cacti.net/ OR, threaten to smash your sister is she gets your internet cap'd again.. OR, pay for your own internet connection |

Ethereal is only useful IF you have a hub and not a switch, your PC is the router, or your switch supports a monitoring port. Otherwise you won't see the other machines traffic (that's the benefit of a switch over a traditional hub.
And would basically be overkill, you just need counters not detailed information about the packets. |

just install Bandwidth Monitor Pro on her computer. Check your usage stats with your ISP, Let it run for a week, check your usage stats with your ISP again and then you will see what percentage she is responsible for.
This way, you don't have to touch your router at all and still get your answer. |
