Heyas

I don't mind watching the odd obscure movie or movies based off real life events...

List them

Touching the Void - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379557/

n the mid-80's two young climbers attempted to reach the summit of Siula Grande in Peru; a feat that had previously been attempted but never achieved. With an extra man looking after base camp, Simon and Joe set off to scale the mount in one long push over several days. The peak is reached, however on the descent Joe falls and breaks his leg. Despite what it means, the two continue with Simon letting Joe out on a rope for 300 meters, then descending to join him and so on.

Requiem for a Dream - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/

Drugs. They consume mind, body and soul. Once you're hooked, you're hooked. Four lives. Four addicts. Four failures. Doing their best to succeed in the world, but failing miserably, four people get hooked on various drugs. Despite their aspirations of greatness, they succumb to their addictions. Watching the addicts spiral out of control, we bear witness to the dirtiest, ugliest portions of the underworld addicts reside in. It is shocking and eye-opening but demands to be seen by both addicts and non-addicts alike.

Kids - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113540/

An amoral, HIV-positive skateboarder sets out to deflower as many virgins as possible while a local girl who contracted his disease tries to save his next target from her same fate

Bully - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0242193/

Based on a true story. Naive teenagers plot to murder one of their own, who has been too much of a bully to them.

Cocaine Cowboys - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380268/

In the 1980s, ruthless Colombian cocaine barons invaded Miami with a brand of violence unseen in this country since Prohibition-era Chicago - and it put the city on the map. "Cocaine Cowboys" is the true story of how Miami became the drug, murder and cash capital of the United States, told by the people who made it all happen.

High Tension - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338095/

Two college friends, Marie and Alexa, encounter loads of trouble (and blood) while on holiday at Alexa's parent's country home when a mysterious killer invades their quiet getaway.

The Tit and the Moon - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111403/

A child does not stand the idea of having a new brother and dreams about drinking milk from the breasts of his mother again. The child asks the moon to bring him a tit only for him.

This is England - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480025/

A story about a troubled boy growing up in England, set in 1983. He comes across a few skinheads on his way home from school, after a fight. They become his new best friends even like family. Based on experiences of director Shane Meadows.

Lost and Delerious - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245238/

Mary Bradford (Mischa Barton) is a shy, naive, freshman newcomer to a fancy girls boarding school where she strikes up a friendship with her two senior roommates, the overachieving Tori Moller (Jessica Paré), and the voraciously poetry reading, unapologetic, closeted lesbian Paulie Oster (Piper Perabo). As Mary tries to adjust to her new suroundings, with some guidence from the local groundskeeper Joe Menzies (Graham Greene), she soon learns that Paulie and Tori are lovers. When Tori, under pressure from her classmates, wants to break it off with Paulie, she resorts to extreme measures to win Tori back.

Fight Club - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523/

An office employee and a soap salesman build a global organization to help vent male aggression.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120669/

The big-screen version of Hunter S. Thompson's seminal psychedelic classic about his road trip across Western America as he and his large Samoan lawyer searched desperately for the "American dream"... they were helped in large part by the huge amount of drugs and alcohol kept in their convertible, The Red Shark.

Got any others?

That's probably not all of them, but that's all I could think of at the moment...

if i was to say my favourite film of all time is.... i would say ...
A Scanner Darkly

The L.A. of a not-too-distant future suffers a surge of drug abuse involving a new ultra-addictive and eventually brain-damaging substance simply named "D". Bob Arctor is an undercover narc leading a double life, dutifully reporting to his superiors while effectively having abandoned whatever normal existence he had for a "D" user/dealer career. But this schizophrenic situation and the drug-induced memory and concentration lapses put Bob under mounting stress

uses that same animation fizwiz s*** as waking life, and has one of the best cast lineup ever!

another great moive...
Thumbsucker

Justin (Lou Taylor Pucci) is a teenager boy, who has an oral obsession with his thumb. His mother (Tilda Swinton) seems to be a normal housekeeper, but she has her own obsessions as well, like a crush on a TV-star (Benjamin Bratt). The only person who's aware of Justin's problem is his father (Vincent D'Onofrio), manager in a store, but none of his advices seem to be working for Justin. The kid is signed up in a debate workshop, but the thing isn't going well, because he has his mind in a pretty classmate and, of course, in his thumb, affecting all the rest of his classes. So, Justin is a loner kid in the school, who prefers to lock himself in the bathroom and suck his thumb. Justin's dentist (Keanu Reeves), a mystical-hippie person, will try to help to overcome his thumb problem, through the hypnosis. But the school's psychologist will diagnose Justin with the Attention Deficit Disorder, and will prescribe him some drugs. Suddenly, Justin's problem with his thumb will disappear, becoming an hyperactive genius, winning several debate contests and the admiration from his teacher (Vince Vaughn). Nevertheless, more serious problems will come for Justin with his mother, his father and with a drug addiction

Mulholland Drive!!!!

A bright-eyed young actress travels to Hollywood, only to be ensnared in a dark conspiracy involving a woman who was nearly murdered, and now has amnesia because of a car crash. Eventually, both women are pulled into a psychotic illusion involving a dangerous blue box, a director named Adam Kesher, and the mysterious night club Silencio.

Let me preface the following outburst by saying I generally like David Lynch's work and I'm a big fan of Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway etc but bugger me if Mulholland Drive wasn't a celluloid travesty. I won't "spoil" it (at least any more than Lynchy already has done) but suffice to say I thought it was hogwash and the only thing that kept me sitting through till the end was the faint promise of more lesbian sex scenes.

Hmm the lesbian sex scenes...on second thought...maybe so it wasn't all bad.

No really, the "is-it-a-dream?" sequence, wishy-washy, "nothing-is-happening-so-I'll-fire-in-a-couple-of-tittie-fiddling scenes-to-keep-the-guys-interested-and-the-ladies-curious" was nothing short of tedium ad nauseum.

I know it divided the film-going community as to whether it was a masterpiece of esoteric cinema or a load of old balls.

I am in the latter camp I am afraid.

Phew, ok I got it off my chest. I am ok now.

On we go...

However one weird/obscure moofie I would recommend is Butterfly Kiss. I saw it a long time ago but it stuck with me as an unnerving look at the darker side of friendship.

Bad Boy Bubby is excellent, as is Ken Park. Check out Old Boy and Marebito for some Japanese oddities that might tickle yer fancy.

You have to remember that Mulholland Dr. was meant to be a tv show, which was canned, and the pilot resurrected as a feature film. Might explain some of the breakage..

Bad Boy Bubby

Bad Boy Bubby is just that: a bad boy. So bad, in fact, that his mother has kept him locked in their house for his entire thirty years...

Really, this one should have Been mentioned already, for shame QGL :D

Big Fish

A story about a son trying to learn more about his dying father by reliving stories and myths his father told him about himself.

I really liked this movie.
EDIT: Oeer, I just found out it was a Tim Burton film. Cool.

heh, blue velvet.. that brings back soem memories! /me takes a huge snort from a hidden oxygen mask ;p if you liked 'fear & loathing in la' or generally like hunter s. thompson stories there is an earlier movie called...
where the buffalo roam
The deranged adventures of Gonzo journalist Hunter Thompson and his attorney Oscar Acosta, referred to in the movie as "Laslow". Thompson attempts to cover the Super Bowl and the 1972 Presidential election in his typical drug-crazed state, but it continually and comically sidetracked by his even more twisted friend Laslow. Allegedly based on actual events.

for creepiness you cant go past...
La Cité des enfants perdus aka city of lost children.
Krank (D. Emilfork), who cannot dream, kidnaps young children to steal their dreams. One (R. Perlman), a former whale hunter who is as strong as a horse, sets forth to search for Denree, his little brother who was kidnaped by Krank's men. Helped by young Miette (J. Vittet), he soon arrives in La Cite des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children).

my crazy classic...
Dr Strangelove aka How I learned to Stop Worrying & Love the Bomb.
U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely and utterly mad, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He suspects that the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people. The U.S. president meets with his advisors, where the Soviet ambassador tells him that if the U.S.S.R. is hit by nuclear weapons, it will trigger a "Doomsday Machine" which will destroy all plant and animal life on Earth. Peter Sellers portrays the three men who might avert this tragedy: British Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the only person with access to the demented Gen. Ripper; U.S. President Merkin Muffley, whose best attempts to divert disaster depend on placating a drunken Soviet Premier and the former Nazi genius Dr. Strangelove, who concludes that "such a device would not be a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious". Will the bombers be stopped in time, or will General Jack Ripper succeed in destroying the world ?

[edit] for shame tollazor... bad boy bubby has been mentioned already in this thread ;)

Loved Cocaine Cowboys, twas a f***ing amazing doco. Mulholland Drive is also f***ing great as well.

Speaking of weird, Naked Lunch finally gets released May 9th here on DVD. Wanna see a bizarre movie look no further than this.
Only master film maker David Cronenberg (Crash, The Fly, Scanners) could bring the most controversial novel of our time to the screen.

When an exterminator develops an addiction to the substance he uses to kill bugs, he accidentally murders his wife and becomes involved in a covert government plot being orchestrated by giant bugs in an Islamic port town in Africa.

Join an all star cast that includes Peter Weller (Robocop), Roy Scheider (Blue Thunder), Judy Davis (The Break-Up) and Ian Holm (The Aviator) on a terrifying trip into a world where fantasy and reality, terror and pleasure are all served together in a feast for the senses.

Boxing Helena - One of my all time favs, great movie!
A top surgeon is besotted with a beautiful woman who once ditched him. Unable to come to terms with life without her, he tries to convince her that they need each other. She has other ideas, but an horrific accident leaves her at his mercy, when he starts to amputate her to keep her dependent on him. The plot is bizarre and perhaps sick at times, ending abruptly and with a twist.

Mysterious Skin
In 1981, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the eight years old boy Neil McCormick is sexually abused by his pedophile baseball coach and his deranged and promiscuous mother does not pay attention. Meanwhile, the also eight years Brian Lackey awakes from a brief amnesia of four hours with a bleeding nose, but his negligent father does not pay attention to the event. Brian grows-up believing he had been abducted by aliens. The gay Neil grows-up as a hustler. When Brian is eighteen years old, he looks for and meets Neil, who discloses dark innermost secrets of their past.

Welcome to the Dollhouse
Seventh-grade is no fun. Especially for Dawn Weiner when everyone at school calls you 'Dog-Face' or 'Wiener-Dog.' Not to mention if your older brother is 'King of the Nerds' and your younger sister is a cutesy ballerina who gets you in trouble but is your parents' favorite. And that's just the beginning--her life seems to be falling apart when she faces rejection from the older guy in her brother's band that she has a crush on, her parents want to tear down her 'Special People's Club' clubhouse, and her sister is abducted....

El Laberinto del fauno, aka Pans Labyrinth
In 1944 fascist Spain, a girl, fascinated with fairy-tales, is sent along with her pregnant mother to live with her new stepfather, a ruthless captain of the Spanish army. During the night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old fawn in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.

Kissed
Over the years, a child's romantic ideals about death blossom into necrophilia, the study of embalming and the most profound relationship of her life

Anatomie
Medical student Paula Henning wins a place at an exclusive Heidelberg medical school. When the body of a young man she met on the train turns up on her dissection table, she begins to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, and uncovers a gruesome conspiracy perpetrated by an Antihippocratic secret society operating within the school.

Crash
Since a road accident left him with serious facial and bodily scarring, a former 'TV scientist' has become obsessed by the marriage of motor car technology with what he sees as the 'raw sexuality' of car-crash victims. The scientist, along with a crash victim he has recently befriended, sets about performing a series of sexual acts in a variety of motor vehicles, either with other crash victims or with prostitutes who they contort into the shape of trapped-corpses. Ultimately, the scientist craves a suicidal union of blood, semen and engine coolant, a union with which he becomes dangerously obsessed.

The Secretary - Another fav
Lee Holloway is a smart, quirky woman in her twenties who returns to her hometown in Florida after a brief stay in a mental hospital. In search of relief from herself and her oppressive childhood environment, she starts to date a nerdy friend from high school and takes a job as a secretary in a local law firm, soon developing an obsessive crush on her older boss, Mr. Grey. Through their increasingly bizarre relationship, Lee follows her deepest longings to the heights of masochism and finally to a place of self-affirmation.

From Dusk Til Dawn
Seth Gecko and his younger brother Richard are on the lam after a bloody bank robbery in Texas. They escape across the border into Mexico and will be home-free the next morning, when they pay off the local kingpin. They just have to survive 'from dusk till dawn' at the rendezvous point, which turns out to be a Hell of a strip joint.

The Lost Boys
A mother and her two sons move to a small coast town in California. The town is plagued by bikers and some mysterious deaths. The younger boy makes friends with two other boys who claim to be vampire hunters while the older boy is drawn into the gang of bikers by a beautiful girl. The older boy starts sleeping days and staying out all night while the younger boy starts getting into trouble because of his friends' obsession

That will do for now!

A pair of escaped convicts meet up with a group of gangsters by a remote forest road. After an arguement over a girl the mobsters have kidnapped, shots are fired and one of the gangsters is killed. The standoff is cut short, however, when the dead man suddenly springs to life and starts trying to kill his former friends. The zombie eventually goes down in a hail bullets, but their problems aren't over. It seems the gangsters have been using this forest to dispose of of their victims, all of whom are now looking to settle some old scores. Even if they get through this mess, there is still the question of why they've arranged to meet the convicts out here, and why they've brought along the girl. How are they connected to the dead bodies coming back to life?

If 70's cannibals and the like are your thing, try "I Drink your Blood".

A band of satanist hippies roll into a town and begin terrorizing the local folk. They rape a local girl and her grandpa goes after them. He fails and is given LSD. This bothers his grandson and he gets back at the hippies by feeding them meat pies infected with blood from a rabid dog. They turn into crazed lunatics and begin killing and/or infecting everything in their path.

"I Spit on Your Grave" is a film for for the rape-revenge crowd complete with gruesome murdering fun for the whole family.

The film follows Jennifer, a writer who is working on a new novel and needs to get out of the city to finish it. She hires a riverside apartment in upstate New York to finish her novel, attracting the attention of a number of rowdy male locals. They catch Jenifer one day and strip her naked for the village idiot (Matthew) and rape her. Jennifer is later attacked and raped a further two times by the four degenerates, and her novel is also destroyed. But Jennifer slowly recovers and in her now-twisted, psychotic mind, she then begins to seek revenge on the four men who raped her.

"Ed Wood" is a must see for fans of B-grade horror movies.

A biopic of the life and work of the legendary 'worst director of all time', Edward D.Wood, Jr., concentrating on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s, when he made 'Glen or Glenda', 'Bride of the Monster' and 'Plan 9 From Outer Space', and focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi.

And if you are a true B-grade fan then please tell me you have seen "American Movie",
cos that rocks harder than Dio.

On the northwest side of Milwaukee, Mark Borchardt dreams the American dream: for him, it's making movies. Using relatives, local theater talent, slacker friends, his Mastercard, and $3,000 from his Uncle Bill, Mark strives over three years to finish "Covan," a short horror film. His own personal demons (alcohol, gambling, a dysfunctional family) plague him, but he desperately wants to overcome self-doubt and avoid failure. In moments of reflection, Mark sees his story as quintessentially American, and its the nature and nuance of his dream that this film explores.

1941 by Speilberg with John Belushi, Akroyd and others in it at their funniest. I loved that movie for all its craziness and it flopped big time at the box office, but that isnt really a reflection on how good a movie is hey.

Also Dr Strangelove...hey Demon, I saw a doco where it was revelaed that Kubrick wanted Sellers to also play the role of the Pilot captain (Slim Pickens' role) they even had a few pics of him in the costume for the part, but Sellers declined stating that four personalities was enough for him to control during one movie! hehe still a great piece of celluloid history that one.

Immortal

New York 2095. In a strange pyramid floating in the sky, the gods of ancient Egypt are judging Horus. In the city, a young women with blue hair and tears is arrested, but she has a secret power, even to herself...

This movie is set in the year 2095, hence the presence of mutant humans and extraterrestrials. The main character is known as Jill (Linda Hardy). She is not human. When she is discovered by Dr Elma Turner (Charlotte Rampling) she is diagnosed as being the most interesting genetic test subject Turner has ever come across. Her organs are not in the right place, she has no memory and she appears, biologically to be only three months old. Turner gives her a break, gives her an identity card and a place to stay, in exchange for being her guinea-pig to work on and discover more about. Nicopol is a frozen prisoner who is due to be released a year after the film is set. There is a problem in the prisoner ward and several are thrown down to grow (dying in the process), including Nicopol (but only his leg). There is a lot more to this story but I can't disclose it in this summary, I don't have the words

Memento

Memento chronicles two separate stories of Leonard (Guy Pearce), a ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. One story line movies forward in time while the other tells the story backwards revealing more each time.

Oh and talking of weird cool gangsta films i enjoyed watching "Brother" starring and directed by Takeshi Kitano.

A Japanese Yakuza gangster is exiled to the United States. Takeshi settles in Los Angeles where his younger, half brother lives and finds that although the turf is new, the rules are still the same as they try to take over the local drug trade

The Science of Sleep

Following the death of his father in Mexico, Stéphane Miroux, a shy insecure young man, agrees to come to Paris to draw closer to his widowed mother Christine. He lands a boring job at a calendar-making firm and falls in love with his charming neighbor Stéphanie. But conquering her is no bed of roses for the young man and the only solution he finds to put up with the difficulties he is going through is escape into a dream world.

Twelve Monkeys

Terry Gilliam's nightmarish low-tech/high-tech future vision takes place in 1997, after a deadly virus has killed 99% of the human population--forcing the survivors to flee beneath our planet's surface. This leaves the (other) animals topside, to rule the Earth once again. The scientists select James Cole, an imprisoned sociopath, to return to the past and gather information useful in the defense against this contagion. Once back in time, he is to investigate the mysterious 'Army of the Twelve Monkeys' and report his findings. Scientific, social, and political themes like time travel (and its inherent paradoxes and nested loops), mental illness, the nature of reality, animal rights, and the Armageddon-potential of unchecked technological advances are artfully and cleverly explored.

"The Machinist", odd movie, probably the disturbing I've seen of late.

Chrisitan Bale, the anorexic, before he did Batman, pretty amazing transformation for his role in this movie. Seemed like a cross between Memento and Fight Club.

Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.

Equilibrium
At the end of World War III, the world fell under the control of Father and the Tetragrammaton: a government that outlaws all forms of art and emotion. Citizens are forced to take drugs that eliminate emotions. However, "Sense Offenders": citizens who resist the laws and operate underground are continually at war with the Tetragrammaton. John Preston is a Cleric, an elite super-soldier who's mission is to hunt down and eliminate Sense Offenders with the help of a ruthless police force. One day, Preston accidentally breaks his morning dose of emotion suppressant drug and begins to feel. Soon, he begins sympathizing with the Sense Offenders and begins to understand the beauty of feeling... A beauty that the government, in which Preston spent his life serving, would like to see destroyed.

this one is awesome
Basic
An Army sergeant (Samual Jackson) takes six of his special troops on a training mission into the rain-soaked Colombian jungles and only two come out alive. When the rescue mission arrives, they see one soldier (Brian Van Holt) killing another and carrying a wounded comrade (Giovanni Ribisi). As the interrogation begins, the soldier refuses to talk to anyone other than another Ranger. The investigating officer (Connie Nielsen) protests, but her commanding officer (Timothy Daly) nonetheless brings in a former Ranger and current DEA agent (John Travolta) to help. The agent is currently on suspension from DEA for allegedly accepting a bribe. From this point on, the plot continues to twist and turn and offers numerous surprises that keeps the story interesting.

yeah dracula 3000 is probably one of the s***test movies out there, its not the worse ive seen, but its up there.

more classics.

Battle Royale
"Battle Royale - A random class of Japanese ninth grade student are - in this fictional universe - randomly selected by a fascist government lottery. They become kidnapped and forced onto an isolated island, where they are equipped with food, water, a map and a random weapon. On the island, they have to compete in a violent death match game till only one single victor remain. Failure to follow the rules or participate in the death match results in death by an exploding collar everyone has to wear"

oh and how can i forget the more recently released....
Death Note
Light Yagami finds the "Death Note," a notebook with the power to kill, and decides to create a Utopia by killing the world's criminals, and soon the world's greatest detective, "L," is hired to find the perpetrator. An all out battle between the greatest minds on earth begins, the winner controlling the world

basically a comic book - anime - movie conversion, ive watched the anime and its probably one of the best ive seen in a very very long time. the movie follows it more closely then any other conversion, the changes they do make are only dont hinder the overall story and its truely brillant, i highly recomend it.
