depends exactly when. I have a 4x agp gf2gts, I guess at one point it was "top of the line". At least I think it's agp 4x. I also have a diamond viper II (aka s3 2000 or some s***) and it's best used as a paperweight, or to fend off attackers.

so why do you want to know what the top of the line card was, back in the day? Why not just get something new & cheap? Are you planning on rummaging around computer markets looking for a geforce 2 or something?

usually 8x agp card will run in 4x agp slots...
Prolly one of the best cars would have been a Ti4600 or that sortta thing. |

Are we counting 8X cards that would run at 4X? Of so, top one I can think of is the Ti4800, but didn't the 5x00s run at 4X? I'm tempted to say who cares, but it's already been done.
4MB Diamond Viper V330 (Riva 128) ftw. Yay for Quake 3 @ 512x384@20fps. |

Every 8x card can run at 4x, so the best agp card would be the 1950pro agp or whatver that ati one is.

Man that'd be slow, since it'd have to use a PCIe to AGP bridge.

I'm pretty sure the Geforce 4200ti and 4400ti were the hottest AGP4x cards, i'm pretty sure the 4600ti and 4800ti were AGP8x. I seem to remember some companies releasing 8x 4200ti's and 4400's, can anybody else varify this?
Anyway, like it was said before, AGP 8x video cards will run at 4x (but nothing lower). So the best card that will work in an AGP 4x slot would have to be the geforce 7800gs or whatever the best radeon AGP card is. |

That $700 orchid righteous 3d working on the quake menu was certainly a religious experience...
Although to be honest my $200 purchase of a 1MB VESA local bus isa card allowing me to play fullscreen smooth doom probably takes the cake for pure awesomeness and wow-immersion back in the day |

SHLAAAAAAAAP ! unfortunately this is not so :( It pains me to see that some IT Retailers are *still* selling entry-level systems with AGP-mobos that are nigh-impossible to upgrade with AGP cards atm *cough* crappy Gigabyte 945 mobos *cough*. |

oops, $350 sounds more like it. that one really overclocked too - stock it did about 35fps@512x384, but you could tweak it and quake to well over 60fps! |

Heh ... glquake on an s3 virge was sad yet funny.
4meg voodoo1 was my first real 3d card. My pair of creative v2-12megs cost me $1400 but they did last for ages (yeah, I am still trying to justify spending that much on videos card 10 years later). |

All 8x cards should run at 4x in theory, though I've come across a couple of motherboards that wouldn't post with 8x cards
