This driving me crazy. Setting up Exchange 03 for RPC/HTTP/S for remote users and also OMA for syncing some k/jam phones. Error i keep getting is :

Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [sbsserver.xyz123.local] User: [test@xyz123] HTTP status code: [501]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.

I have googled the s*** out of this and aint getting any where fast. I have confirmed and reset permissions, disabled forms, still no go.

Anyone help? I'm tempted to write no stupid answers but that will only encourage, oh wait, i already di.....

501 is a server side error (from the webserver).

501 Not Implemented

The server does not support the functionality required to fulfill the request. This is the appropriate response when the server does not recognize the request method and is not capable of supporting it for any resource.

So, given what you've told me I'd say it's likely that whatever connector you think you're using for Exchange through IIS for your PDA either isn't installed or is broken.

The only experience I've had with Exchange/IIS is with OWA, but that's where I'd start looking

It might be useful to capture the request that's coming into IIS so that you can test it from your machine easily without firing up your PDA. Certain aspects of the system might become apparent at the same time if you do that.

don't bother exchange syncing Windows Mobile phones unless they're WM5. WM5 is a breeze to get sync'ing working.

They are too! I've got two JasJams ( 3g version of k-jam ) connected to Exchange with no problems.

we just had to install the Mobile component for Exchange2003 sp2 and set the phone to sync to it via https. Oh you also need a *real* SSL certificate from a major vendor for it to work. Altho I think you can test it via http if it's USB connected to your PC.

Do you have form based authentication enabled for OWA? If so that can cause issues. Also setting up a frontend/backend exchange for it can be a bit tricky too.

https://mail.domain.com/exchange is correct.

WM5 is very picky about the certificate. It *has* to be a real certificate from a major SSL place AND the host must match.

Ok.. trying to post this for the fourth time :)

You *don't* need a "real" certificate, but you will need to download and install your self-signed one from your certificate server PRIOR to running ActiveSync.

Easiest way is to go to https://yourdomain.com/certsrv and grab it in DER format.

Supporting this is part of my job (I'm a network engineer tasked to support 3rd level tech support for a major telco).

Cheers,
Ges

Edit: w00t! It worked :D

AFAIK the WM5 devices have something that stops you from installing your own certificates. Maybe they've changed it in newer version so that you can ?

GRATS!

TiT: Are you using a wildcart cart because they won't work either.

Wildcard certs and unsigned certs. You need a root cert from a major company like verisign or whatever . Microsoft has locked it this way apparently.

Check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841060 for more info.

What happens when you browse to the site (https://mail.domain.com/oma) from IE on the PDA and from a desktop?

Are there any errors in the event log on the server?

Are you going through an ISA server?

Not sure.. I've been doing this for the last 5 months or so, and I've never had a problem with a WM5 device.

Whatever you do, don't touch the Nokia E series phones. They're rubbish. So far, the only thing I've found the E61 to be useful for is chocking open doors.

If people are having problems with certs and WM5 devices, please let me know and I'll try to help as much as I can.

Cheers,
Ges

P.S. TiT, you've been added to MSN. Gimme a yell when you're able to chat.
