Do you guys know if it is normal to be paid annual leave in advance, ie. when taking leave, recieve the pay for that leave at the beinning of the period so you have it to use on your holidays?

I'm on leave at the moment, but I haven't been told about when I'm getting my leave pay, and on current schedule, My leave will be more than 2/3rds over by the time I do get paid, which will suck.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

At my place of work, you can request Annual leave paid in advance as long as the leave is more then 2 weeks. But they aren't required to give it to you.

It depends on what your contract says.

Where i work we can ask for it either way all in advance, or just get paid normall.

and when you request that it is paid in advance, do they just throw it in with the pay before you would go on leave... or would they make a special payment for you around when your leave starts?

most probably just managerial incompetence, but oh well... I don't work there anymore. I timed it well so that I would be on leave for my last 3 weeks there - yay and I've been on leave since friday.

I thought it was generally just paid, as you would normally be paid.

I called my boss and he said he'd look into it... After reading the thread's responses I remembered that I had been asked by my manager if I wanted pay in advance and I told him I did, mind you this was like a month ago, and I had had to remind him about 5 times that I was taking leave in the first place...

Then again if you no longer work there, you may not get paid at all, depending on how questionable their business practices are, which means even more grief in the long run. You should get paid at the same time you normally would, regardless of whether you are on leave or not, unless you made arrangements otherwise.

I'd call and ask regardless if you are the least bit unsure. At my prior workplace there were a few people in this position who did not get the leave they were owed paid to them and had to resort to legal measures.

The amended Workplace Relations Act Part 7 Division 4 says nothing about when annual leave must be paid, therefore it is up to the employer to act in a reasonable manner meaning payment should be made in line with the regular pay cycle.

Yeah we are able to request our pay and leave pay in advance of our leave, or just wait for it in the normal pay period. Just ask them, generally if there is a formal leave form there is the option of selecting when you want the pay.

My new job doesnt even pay leave loading because they think its the same amount you get taxed for it anyway. Which isnt right. Stingy millionaire bastards.

my work just pays you as per the normal pay cycle (monthly)

so we never get holiday pay paid in advance

my employer has always asked me if i wanted in advance or as per normal pay schedule, in a rare case on special request they may do a special payment, but it would have to be for a decent enough reason.

My work (Local Council) Get paid at the normal increments. (Fortnightly)

Is an option to take 1/2 pay though (I.e. 4 weeks off, but only 2 weeks of pay)

Unless you have made a request for early payment you will probably find it in your next scheduled pay. Some employers will pay it early, but because most companies payroll system/cycle runs better without fiddling around, they will probably loathe to take the initiative and pay you before it's due.

Not to mention that early payments (leave advances) have a negative affect on cashflow.

At my work its just part of the regular pay cycle. I asked about it once and was told that its only done as normal with pay advances - for a good reason and on request. We do get leave loading and a flat 37.5 hour week as part of our contract so its a bit of give and take.

The only place I've worked at where its in advance was BigW, but they worked us like dogs so it was no real compensation!

I've kind of ruled out everything you guys are talking about...

Its Officeworks, so it is a big company...
My manager asked me if I wanted the leave in advance, to which I said, of course...

So either he hasn't told head office I'm on leave at all, or more likely he didn't say that I wanted my leave in advance, either way, hes a tool.

I've never taken annual leave in the four years I've worked at officeworks. I have more than 200 hours of annual saved up and I was hoping to use a lot of it during the three weeks that I don't have to work, and even more-so during the first two weeks where I don't have to be getting organised for my new job.

Spend your hard earned cash on chains....

1: They can be quite usueful in using your foots momentem to tranfer that energy to your bicycles wheels
2a: They also make provide a damned fine disciplinary tool for your kids (anyone know where I can find a reseller of razor straps?)
2b: They also make provide a damned fine disciplinary tool for your wife in keeping her within reach of the kitchen

Leave loading isn't s***.. It was originally based on the concept that you did "X" overtime during the year and that 17.5% was the approx avg you could concievably miss out on whilst on annual leave. It was something hard fought for by the unions (same as a 38 hour week) which everyone likes to just piss away and lay down over now while their employer happily sinks the boot in.

i always get my holiday pay in advance with leave loading... it's just a checkbox on our leave form. of course the leave form has to be submitted to management at least 4weeks in advance for this to happen without f***up.
