Topic: Recommend me a mechanic (North side)

I know f***-all about the inner workings of a car. I used to go to some mechanic that my mum went to at Everton Park. He was alright, a bit of an arrogant f***, but he never messed up and his prices seemed fair. A while ago he sold his business though. Mum went to the new guy who bought it and said he was a f***wit, so I'm not gonna bother going back.

Which brings me to my next problem.

I've got a few things wrong with my car, I'm due for a service and wheel balance as well as some other s***. I need you guys to recommend me a good mechanic, preferably on the North side, who will do a good job for a good price. You hear too many stories about dodgy mechanics who rip people off who don't know much about cars (namely, me). I don't want that to happen, so I figured you car dudes would be able to recommend someone.

Cheers.

if you dont want to get ripped off just learn a bit about what you need done to the car so it seems like you know what youre talking about and you shouldnt get ripped off too badly, cars arent that hard to understand ... unless youre a woman then its forgivable

I hate to admit it, but I agree with the asshat above me.

Cars aren't too hard to understand, remember joe pleb who dropped out of school in year 6 can figure it out, you just might be able to as well.

joe pleb who dropped out of school in year 6 can't really figure it out, that's why there are plenty of not so great mechanics around

Scorpian at Enogerra. A good solid mechanic, specially for older model cars. Works for the love of the jov. So get good prices from him.

Also never go to a place called "Blue Cross Mechanics" at chermside.
They told my mate it would be fine for them to do the work and have a payment plan for him to pay them back a bit per week (which got written up and then conveniently forgotten) but after the job was done they sent around some "people" to collect all of the money in the next few days.

People like that do not ever deserve business.

be careful of dealer mechanics too! my old lady took her old nissan to a dealer and they told her she was up for a new power steering pump and aircon condensor. She replied that her car didn't have either aircon or powersteering and the guy went nuts telling her he knew his job etc etc. My mother knows how to be a bad-ass ( school teaching for 20+ years will do that ) and totally tore the guy a new a******. I wish I was there to see it.

I used to send my car to Powertorque at Brendale but they mostly specalise in late model HSV/Commodore's. They were absolutely the best mechanics around.. the type of guys where you could just drop in and say g'day to them.

I'd still use them but I use a fleet card for servicing now and they don't take them :(

I use the owner of auto Easy at Northgate on sandagte Rd. He comes to my house and does an awesome job. Tell me exactly what needs to be done now and in the future and physically shows my why it needs to be done and all for a reasonable price.

The keeping me informed part is what I like about Phil at Autoeasy. Not sure what hte guys at his orkshop are liek though coz I only use the owner himself.

you mean to say people go to someone else to do things like oil, oil filter, plugs, leads, air filter, fuel filter?

maybe if you're a girl. if you are a guy you should be doing this all yourself. its piece of piss stuff. the only reason i ever take a car to the mechanics is to check it out for stuff i can't check cos i don't have the knowledge.

same as computers. i don't expect every user to know how to edit the registry, but i do expect every user to at least run spybot and do a cleanup/defrag every now and then.

i don't agree

i think that it is important to have a balance. it is not good to know nothing and do nothing on your own car, and likewise, there are some things about cars you are just better off going to the experts for. ie i don't know how to dial in a cam, i don't have the knowledge or the tools.

if it's an easy 10min job that you can do with a ring spanner and a socket set, do it yourself.

if it's a hard two hour job that you need specialist tools and knowledge for, thats what mechanics are for.

You mean you go to the doctor or hospital everytime you break a bone?

By your logic, you must be a girl Mr. Hardware

i used to do all my own mech work on my bikes coz i liked doing it & imo, bikes are a lot easier to work on than cars. i have the knowledge & tools to do my own car servicing but i'd rather pay a mechanic to do it simply coz i don't like doing it myself. i go to nundah honda for my car... they are expensive but seem reliable & conscientious. also i got full service logs for the possibility of resale.

I do not equate changing oil or plugs to breaking a bone. Perhaps cutting yourself and needing a band-aid is a more appropriate analogy. If i went to the doctor for something minor and easy to fix like that, then yes i would be a girl.

Im trying to present a situation where just cos it is a car issue, means it doesn't necessarily need a mechanic, just like a health issue does not always require a doctor.

There's gotta be a balance of some things you can do yourself, some you can't.

Well obviously the OP's "balance" in this case is tipping towards "can't" thus the post. There are these things called subjectivity, perception and finally and best of all "couldn't be f*** learning cause I got better things to do".

Maybe you should include them points in your brilliant thesis.
