I'd vote for Internode if you're after reliability and good service at a good price without having to worry about getting screwed over.

iiNet would be my second choice, but they have on several occasions screwed over customers by kicking them off plans they previously offered, charging more. Whether or not it was justified is irrelevant to the end user, who gets pissed off.
tpg

TPG punishes you heavily financially if you break contract or try to change your plan in a significant way.
dodo

With Dodo, if you go over your quota you get charged up to a maximum amount before they start limiting your speed. They also count traffic towards your quota in both directions .. while most other ISPs ignore upstream traffic.
anything

No, not anything.

You can easily get bitten by extra charges and draconian contracts if you don't read the terms and conditions carefully. Most people new to ADSL don't understand what's involved and what's the norm, so they can easily get ripped off by a crappy ISP.

Again I have to post the link to the Whirlpool broadband survey, showing what customers thought of their ISP and why they are with them or pissed off with them:

I'm with aaNet and pay $69/mth for 8Mbit with 14Gb downloads. Off-peak between 1am and 8am is half usage counted (ie: download 10Gb and only 5Gb is counted). No shaping but extra Gb's are charged at $4.

Been with them just on 2 months and haven't had a single problem, speeds are super quick all the time. Plus they have a "refer a friend" scheme so if you refer someone to them you get $4 off your bill every month.

Eh? The nearest Node plan is the HOME-High-Power20 at $79.95/mth with 20Gb quota.. unless I'm missing something? If I am tell me, as if there's a better deal around I'll nab it :)

Hmm, the 40gig I was refering too.
there is a $5 difference between node and them. Personally Id feel better spending the extra $5 :P

That, and node doesnt charge you for uploads. Those guys charge for which ever is highest, which is gay.

We're with aanet atm, and we are paying $41 per month for 512/128 4GB.

I hate this plan but I can't get my stubborn father to switch to TPG's ADSL2+ medium plan. Says he's not doing anything unless there is a benefit for him. Fkn idiot

I still can't see it.. $99.95/mth for node's 40Gb plan according to their plans page.

Yeah I made a few mistakes reading that (always read with glasses on kids).

Its $76 but you get 48gig.

Its actually quite compeditive, specially with static IPs, which Im desperatly craving right now on node, but I dont want to spend the extra $20.

The thing that would prevent me is that you dont get capped, you pay. Dangerous for me :)

I have been looking for this sort of thing as well... 1500, and about 40gb.

I found TSN Internet... They're only $60 for 40GB. Just, I'm not 100% crazy on going for a small company... Is anyone from here with them? How do you find the service.

I would stay away from dodo, unless you like dealing with a Pakistan call centre when you get stuck. My sister had flawless service whilst on dial-up, but she switched to broadband and has had nothing but trouble and poor service ever since.

I find that telstra is more stable in metropolitan areas, a little less stable in regional areas, and NOT really reliable in rural areas. That is simply because they are trying to catch up with the fast growing demand for broadband services. They have a bad habit of switching services off to do maintenance and upgrades, without letting people know. Sure, they put notices on their website, but it sucks if you cannot access the net to view these service notices.....

As for other ISP's, I don't have enough experience to warrant making a comment or recommendation.

Here in Bulimba I'm 3.7kms from the exchange and internode doesn't even service my area. :(

Also, when playing BF2 every 60secs or so my ping spikes to 2000ms for about 2-3secs. It's driving me nuts and I can't figure out what is happening. Has anyone some ideas of what I should check on?

Whats wrong with cable. $70 for 10G, hammers, and shaping isn't rigid?

Even if you can't get cable don't hang yourself yet; Telstra may come to the party and offer subsidized rates using NextG as a transport if you can't get dsl or cable. When who knows but it's the sort of thing I'd expect to happen.
