Topic: Ruddock calls Cheney "sir" ?!
Crunch

I just caught a snippet on the ABC news when Ruddock is speaking with Cheney where Cheney is apparantly meeting our troops with Ruddock. I can't recall the context however someone correct me if i'm wrong but I'm sure Ruddock uses the word "sir" and I think when addressing Cheney.

Please tell me I'm wrong here because that would really get on my nerve. As if we don't bow to the USA enough as it is...

I use Sir all the time, doesn't mean it's refering to a person of authority.

You sir, are an idiot.

Protocol? The only times you use Sir are in the following circumstances/positions;

1. If you're in the armed forces
2. If your in a court of law (eg speaking to the judge "Nothing further, Sir.")
3. If you're a waiter at a high class hotel/restaurant
4. If you're a peasant working for a bowl of rice a day

I'm sure there are a few others, but speaking with a politition from another country isn't one of them. It reeks of subservient ass kissing and it pisses me off.

"Sir" is much shorter and quicker to say than "Mr Vice President" which is the correct term to use.

Ruddock would (should) also call Johnny "sir" instead of "Mr Prime Minister" or Kevin Rudd the "Honorable Member for whereverhehailsfrom"

The Queen = "Your Majesty"

Etc, etc.

Also, this thread sucks.

You've obviously never been to court or spoken to a judge. You address them as "Your Honor" not sir.

Edit - Or "Your Worship"

yah not a big deal imo... i call cops 'sir' if i think i got a chance to avoid a traffic infringement :P it's just being polite.

i do, however, think it's over the top to call a magistrate 'your worship' ... heheh, sif worship. :D

I work tightly with executive management, and the only people who call anybody sir are considered suckups.

I think we've reached the pinnacle of ass kissing with that one. You'll know when you've mastered the art of ass kissing when you notice common side effects such as inflated lips and a ripped a******.

Funny you should say that. I was on jury duty for three days this week and both barristers often referred to the judge as "Sir." Maybe your experience in court is from the point of view of the accused?

In Australia it tends to be vaguelly servile to refer to people as 'sir'.

In the States it seems to be just common courtesy between the mens. Ruddock was just playing the diplomat, when in Rome...

Praise be to hookers!!

Also, the only person I call Sir is a Knight and there are all too few who even then deserve that honorific (IMHO)

eg:
Sir Richard Branson (yes)
Sir Joe Bjelke-Petersen (NO)

Well, in your vast experiance as being on the jury for 3 days....I've spent 15 years doing security, and in that time, have detained and arrested a decent number of individuals and had to go to court concerning that. As well as being called as a witness to a fair number of incidents, and in all that time, I was always briefed to call the judge "Your Honor" or "Your Worship". Barristers would be higher up the legal "food chain" than what regular people such as you and I are, so perhaps they are allowed a certain amount of leway.

Edit - I'd be interested to hear from anyone who works in the legal field, or even a current or former police officer to hear what they have been told in regards to this.

When i appealed the loss of my licence to the judge i didnt' have to address the judge by anything. I just avoided answering with "yep", "nah", "you feel me dawg?" and "f*** you".

I ended up getting my licence back.

I don’t think they consider it basic manners. I know it certainly doesn’t feel it when people call me sir. It feels awkward and off-putting. It also totally destroys any level of respect you have for them.

What about teacher and student in high school? Is that not another scenario you would use sir?

I am still in the habit of calling elders sir and miss. Well those who are strangers to me. Say if I was in the city, and the guy in front dropped his wallet, I would say, "Excuse me sir, you drop....." It's a good habit to be in. And same goes for calling females miss.

If you meet a judge in a non-work context you need to use your common sense. It may be embarrassing for a judge to be identified as a judge in a supermarket, on a city street or at a social event. A simple ‘hello’ might be appropriate in these circumstances.

As you get older, people are always calling you sir. I don't think I loose any respect for people when they call me "sir". I guess I might if it was in a work context and they were just being a suck... I like my whores to call me "sir" though ;)
