Heh it's sad that you need to explain it but there's so many people (including, it seems, GUESTS ON HIS ACTUAL SHOW) who don't realise this it's amazing. I guess they're not the sort of people the show is targeted at anyway though.

Actually, Stephen Colbert (person) is a liberal Christian. Stephen Colbert (charactor) is a right-wing facist Catholic.
John Stewart is Jewish.

You just have to remember that Colbert (charactor) and Colbert (person) are not the same - not knowing this might make you have a very dim view on his show. Cynicism rocks though :)
