Can u still run older PCI video cards (9600xt) on newer motherboards which have PCI-E slot? ie. can u just plug the v/card into one of the other PCI slots and leave the PCI-E v/card slot empty?

Or do u need a pci-e v/card if u get a pci-e m/board?

You could, but performace would be poohouse compared to pci-e. The PCI-e bus has a far far greater bandwidth for data transfer if you wondered why and that is a fairly important thing when processing lots of graphical data.

Well I just want to update the folks' pc but hoping they can keep using the 9600xt as they really dont need a new performance card...

So a PCI v/card will definately work on a PCI-E motherboard? Can anyone please confirm?

Are you 100% sure it is PCI and not AGP? I just had a quick google and couldn't see a pci 9600XT videocard anywhere.
