ello ello fellas.. long time no bark..,

budget is slightly flexible, but say i have $700 to spend on a setup (including a cheap 17" lcd), what components would you suggest? also, where's the best place to get em these days?

cheers!

Alright, this was a bit of a challenge but I quickly made a list. Make sure you confirm compatibility.

CPU: Sempron 3000+ (S754) :: $59 (Umart)
M/B: Asus K8V-X-SE :: $45 (MSY)
Memory: 512MB generic :: $58 (MSY)
Graphics: Leadtek 6800XT :: $155 (MSY)
Case: ASUS TA881 (w/ 350W PSU) :: $55 (MSY)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 80GB :: $57 (MSY)
Burner: Pioneer 111D :: $45 (MSY/Umart)
Monitor: 17" Viewsonic VA703B :: $219 (MSY)

Total: $693

With KB+Mouse and speakers (you didn't specify):

KB+Mouse: Logitech Desktop 250 :: $19 (MSY)
Speakers: Antec Lansing 120i :: $18 (MSY)

Total: $730

* If you have any more money, upgrade the memory to 1GB.

lol! You can also pickup counterstrike condition zero from umart, cause thats the only game you'll be able to run.
Small suggestion, save about 800 more dollary-doo's and get a half decent machine.

You don't want me to recommend you a set up, unless you have at least $10K to spend.

sorry, i guess i was thinking that prices had dropped so much in recent years that a gaming machine could be had for that sort of money, but obviously not. i apologize, i genuinely have been out of the loop for several years.

lets say i stretch it to $1000, excluding keyboard/mouse/speakers..?

Or just keep the current PC for internet and office applications and buy a console for games.

Obviously if you're going to spend 10k on a gaming rig you have no life.

Actually it's up to 14k now, had a few bugs to work out but the guys at CA rock hard and now it's a dream machine! It's a change being able to play a game, max out the settings and have it not skip a beat, it makes playing games fun!

Actually all the extra stuff and working out the bugs cost me nothing. It's called good customer service, and thats why I'll head back there next time.

How exactly do you spend $14k on a PC? Do you have to be:
a)Too retarded to be able to put it together yourself
b)Too dumb to shop at the right places
c)So lacking in a social life that you have nothing better to do?

Sure, my PC is a large part of my entertainment and uni work, and I plan on spending a fair bit on a nice rig once I'm working full time but anything over 5k seems kinda redundant to me. What can you do on a $10,000 computer that a $5,000 one couldn't do well enough?

I fail to see what my having an expensive computer has to do with a lack of a social life, inability to meet/score with women, and a gaining of weight. Fine judgment calls from people who have never met me, but if you would like too, look for me at Hermi's next LAN =)

'it makes playing games fun!' heh if thats the deciding thing that makes games 'fun', that is to say watching an expensive piece of equipment running a game then i don't know if you're getting the most out of games dude.. You'd be better off with an xbox.. not even a 360.. just a plain xbox and a few games using the xbox to the 'max!' plus you'd have 13.5k in your pocket..

In the end, the choice was mine, I'm glad I made it, and I'd make the choice again if it came around again. Consoles bore the hell out of me, I prefer pc's. It really makes me laugh though when all you guys jump up and down about this issue, yet you'll drop 10K on a perfectly running car without blinking an eye. I also think given the chance, alot of you would love to run a system like this.

I had the chance.. but left it for a life in the UK.. Enjoying myself and the opportunities its given me.. 10 years down the track i'll be able to look at the 14k i'll have spent while im over here and have a great deal to show for it, life experience, career experience and travel opportunities etc... Hope you can say the same about a slick monitor, metal box and mouse and keyboard combo...

I'm not saying you've done the wrong thing because right and wrong is subjective in given situations nor am I criticising you for the decision.. just from what you said previously eg you wanted to see games running full speed with no slow down, i just highlighted that you could watch most if not all games bar wow and a couple others, running at full speed.. Hell you could even buy a fat tv to watch it all on and it'd still look lush.

Don't really care what he chooses to blow his money on, but I agree with the comment by crizane that anything over $5000 for a PC is a little silly. U reach a point where the correlation between more money equalling more performance decreases exponentially. (i hope i've said that right...anyway u get what i mean).

Valid point there Boxhead, but I've already traveled the world, experienced things good and bad and have a great deal to show for it. Doing what I have done hasn't limited me from doing those very same things again if I chose too (actually thinking of heading to Scotland/UK/Germany later in the year). My spending that much on my system wasn't a whim, I spent over 6 months mulling over this decision, making plans etc.

Man some people are dodge,

Let him spend whatever he likes on a computer. If he's still able to eat/pay the bills and has 14k to spend on entertainment then good on him.

I'm sure some people think that pimpin silvia, or the PS3 you just blew your money on was a maaad decision too.

I'm all for giving him crap on spending so much on a pc, but its funny how some people can't comprehend that there are people who can afford to spend that much money without blinking and without compromising other aspects of their life.

if someone gave me 14k and said spend it on what ever you like i doubt id spend it on a computer, probably pay off my debt and buy some stuff i actually needor something awesome like that, but if someone gave me 100k and said spend it on what ever you want, id probably spend 14k on a computer and the rest on other s***.

if you got the excess cash then spend it on what ever you like.
