Just been testing my new computer out :) its going awesome. Tested half life 2 - lost coast with everything up on full and it looks ridiculous.
I have tested a few games out such as rainbow six vegas (looks awesome, dont like the game play) fear (which looks awesome with everyone on full) doom3 (looks pretty good but not as good as fear) quake 4(same as doom3) just wondering if any of you guys have played/seen etc any other high endish games that i can try out that are fun and will look nice :) |

WoW with everything turned up. He said "games", not "life sucking parasites". Anyhow WoW looks like s***, regardless of graphics settings. And another vote for Company of Heroes. Too addictive. last edited by parabol at 20:48:24 07/Feb/07 |

WoW's graphics are more about it's beautiful art design rather than poly count.
When I gave up wow, most of the reason I was still playing was because the environments where so richly detailed and well designed that playing it was still pleasing. Enough to block out the claustrophobic feeling of being crush against a wall at lv60. Probably a major reason why many players just reroll. |

Now fire up Oblivion and then tell me that WoW still looks good. I'm actually finding more and more these days that I'm preferring exaggerated, "cartoonish" looking games rather than ones which try to look real. Not to say I didn't think Oblivion looked great, I loved the outdoor environments, but I'm just so over that style atm. I'm digging the style of WoW or that new Warhammer mmo or Teamfortress 2 much more these days, I just find it more interesting to look at. The thing with realistic environments is that... well... they're real. Its stuff you can see looking out your window or driving down the road or walking through the city. Sure its impressive they can reach those levels of realism, but theres only so many times I can see highly detailed shiny metal, parallax mapped cobblestones or very pretty trees before it just all feels the same. And this all really has not much to do with the thread, but, well, I felt compelled to share. |

Ya know, I've been playing Command & Conquer (First Decade DVD-ROM). You know, the first one, which came out in 1995.
It surprised me just how well it holds up. Considering it came out less than a year after the first WarCraft game. As for roadtesting a new PC - Fry Cry? |

I'm only half serious about this, but I always found it fun to fire up an old game like Wing Commander or something which doesn't account for fast processors (>8MHz) and therefore blazes through all the animations etc.
Fly out into space and see how quickly it empties out your fuel tank :D I think one of the first Commander Keen or Jazz Jackrabbit games might have suffered from this too? Anyway, as already said, Supreme Commander is the ultimate test for now. Hopefully this will have a benchmark feature of some kind, as this will be a good test for at least the next 12 months. |

Another vote for company of heroes, that is pretty much the only recent game that has held my attention for any longer than a few days.
Speaking of installing old games, I remeber Full Throttle being totally kickass. I installed that a couple years ago to play it again... god the pixels oh the pixels :( I can't even imagine how bad it'd be today. The original res was probably < 640x480 heh. |
