Hi Guys,
I am doing ITS701 in Sem1, and i am having major issues. Basically looking at ITS701, there is a lecture on thursdays from 10am-12pm, and pracs scattered around the place. Now i cant make this lecture due to work so theres the first issue. My question is, to anyone that has done ITS701, can i cope without being able to make it to the lectures and just going to the pracs instead? secondly, the prac i want to go to is on Mondays from 5:30-7:30pm in S616. My other issue is that this seems to clash with the CPE (continued professional education) CCNA course that you have to pay for up front, which states Mondays and Thursday evenings! now from what i understand, ITS701 is a lecture and prac based subject, with multiple assessments including a case study, couple of small exams etc etc etc and gets you a GPA at the end of it, and CPE CCNA is the normal course, with 2 sessions a week that you attend and get a pass/fail mark whcih you can claim credit for. i WANT to do ITS701, and i cant AFFORD to pay for CPE CCNA. Can anyone thats done this please shed some light on what each are and whether ill be wasting my time if i cant attend the lectures? this is really s***ting me, i would think with a subject like ITS701, evening lectures would be made available... |

My question is, to anyone that has done ITS701, can i cope without being able to make it to the lectures and just going to the pracs instead?Since most of your material will actually come from the cisco website then yes you can actually do well at the subject without attending much of the lectures, much like i did. The lecturer's lecture notes are a mere summary of the more detailed online cisco material, so if you read the online cisco material in your own time it should cover the lectures pretty nicely. But then again i'd also say it depends on who's going to lecturer that subject. If it's Ricco (I had him for ITS701 and that's who you'll most likely get) then he's pretty good as he'll explain some of the more complex stuff and answer any questions you have about assesments etc.. but if you have LT (i had him for ITS702) as a lecturer then avoid him by all means necessary since all he'll do is make screen dumps of the online cisco material, throw it into a ppt slide and simply mumble to himself for 2 hours. Biggest waste of time ever. That being said, ITS701 is a fairly easy subject and i'm assuming you're pretty computer savvy so you shouldn't have any problems if you do the online reading with its associated module exams and attend the pracs. When i did ITS701 at the begining of last year it was just a pass or fail. Then when i got to do ITS702 that's when they changed it so it's GPA based. From what i rememeber there was only one lecture at one time for the entire subject (more than half the lecture stopped attending by the middle of the semester cause how hopeless LT was). As for CPE CCNA i'm not sure since i never got to doing it. If you've got any other questions then ask me on msn, or if you wanna get a 7 then 'i can tell you how' ;)...ya black bimbo. last edited by Booyah at 12:24:58 05/Feb/07 |

I went to lectures fell asleep and passed with flying colours.
I did not pay attention in lectures (thanks wifi qtqut) wow was much more interesting. Just do the assessment and you won't have a problem. |

For both ITS701 and ITS702 I was able to attend the CPE class (night time). They don't advertise this...just contact the supervisor.
Have to agree with Booyah though no point in going to lectures if you have Loo Tang. If you have Ricco probably worth while, but not necessary. |

the only thing is, as booyah said its701 is gpa based now so theres ongoing assessment that isnt in CPE (from what i can gather)
so going to the others would mean i miss material required for assessment in 701? |

yeah, probably every day or two since December. They still cant answer my questions directly, and will only communicate via email so it seems there are lost in translation issues.
they seem to bypass the main point im asking about and skirt around giving me answers that are no help at all. |

Tung, if you're still keen on doing ITS701 then i'd advise to get into a group for your assesments early on.
You'll get a skill based exam, case study and a final exam, usually all due on the same week. Skill based and case study are to be done in a group (of 2 i think). There will be a set date and time to do your skills based and final exam so you'll have to attend in person. The case study is like a normal assignment that you can do at home and is to be handed in whenever the deadline is for that. All the assesments are easy and you should be able to knock off the case study in a few days if that. Ricco even canceled the case study assesements cause he thought we had too many assignments for other subjects, that's how easy going he is. As for the skill based exam you're allowed to bring in written notes and it takes about an hour or two of preparation. The final exam is a 2 hour multiple choice questions which you should be able to finish in half that time. You're allowed 2 attempts, and i've known people to have done them in 4 attempts. Let's just say it's an almost garanteed pass (back when it wasn't based on GPA, but the point is Ricco is a champ) That being said, double check all this ofcourse with your unit outline/lecturer etc. You could dodgey this subject up and still pass pretty easily. Just do your readings at home and attend the the skill based and final exam. last edited by Booyah at 15:19:26 05/Feb/07 |

Tung i have dne all these subjects, you dont need to attend the its701 or its702 especially if the lecturer is Loot Faget. he is useless but i have to admit if you just go to him and say look i have work and cant make it to the lecture he wont care..
as long as you get your work done you will pass no problems. honestly going to LT's lecture/tutes is a waste of time unless your Asian cause then he will do the parc/exam for you. otherwise your on your own. pluss he teaches nothing in the lecture nor does he do anything during the tute. if you are haing trouble getting replys from the lectures speak with sunwan(sp) she is on level 5 in S block and she will help you with anything best person in the whole uni if you ask me. she is extremely helpful. PS: it helps if you can get into the labs at some point and do the tutes your self cause it really helps when it comes time for the prac exam. last edited by TufNuT at 17:37:00 05/Feb/07 |

Yeah LT was a f***** of a lecturer so much so that most of the students enrolled in that subject put in a formal complaint against him.
Dont get me wrong he knows his s***, except he couldn't teach for s*** nor could he hold the students' attention for 10 seconds even if his life depended on it. What f***ed me right off was when he kept switching me between 2 different groups without even letting me know. I felt like backslapping him back to beijing wata f*****. edit: p.s: tuffy i dare you send him an email with a link to this thread aha. last edited by Booyah at 02:02:16 06/Feb/07 |

My question is, is there a semester that goes by that you don't have an issue with QUT?

Is that just a way of expressing your sarcasm against qut or is that question directed at me?
Former: i agree. Later: no. |
