How to i stop windows media player being associated with my mp3/m3u files. I've done everything i can find in windows media player and winamp to try and associate the files with winamp but they always open in wmp. I'm even running that little homo winamp icon in my systray.

Also, when windows media player does play an mp3, then is minised it just disappears. Completely. I can press stop on my keyboard and it stops playing, but still has the file locked. Any help on killing media player greatly appreciated.

right click the toolbar & go toolbars -> windows media player then when you minimize it it'll show up as a toolbar. I don't know anything about wmp completely dissapearing. Does it end up in the systray?

Thanks for that. Nope, wasn't going to the systray. I'd have to kill the process in taskmanager to stop it locking the mp3 i'd last accidentally opened with it.

can't right click its process and go window -> bring to front in task manager? I've used that a couple of times to bring back programs that seem to have gone bye bye. Also another one I constantly got with mine sweeper was it would somehow open itself off screen so a quick alt+space+m and use the arrow keys to move it back onto the screen fixed it. Also seems to work on some programs in xp.

edit: also install this process explorer. It's infinitely better than the built in task manager of windows, I think it still works on vista, maybe.

i heard a rumour that WMP11 checks the authenticity of you mp3s etc and doesnt play them if they are downloaded etc?

i think its total bs, have u guys had any problems with not authentic media?

I right click on selected MP3, go "Open With" and then choose the program of my choice from the box and click "Always use this program"

It worked for Winamp v WMP and it also worked for MPC v WMP

Open With / Chose default program worked. Maybe i should do Vista for Dummies.

Process explorer has been updated for vista and is sweet.

I haven't purchased any MP3s and WMP wasn't complaining about any of them. Maybe it checks if your license of wm* files is valid, but wtf would you be doing with them anyway?

yep.. don't have your audio files encoded with usage rights and you'll be fine. this has been in effect since um... MP9 I think

I work at officeworks, it makes me think of the most basic things first...

just for the record though... that whole Open With thing, has been around in windows as long as I remember... Definatley in 2k and xp.
