The board felt that the negative words used in the advertisement detracted from the otherwise playful nature of the word Pom, leaving it with a "derogatory and almost hostile meaning", said ASB acting CEO Mark Jeanes. POM isn't a derogatory word? Wow, I've been using it in the wrong context for a long time. |

POM isn't a derogatory word? Should be POME - Prisoner Of Mother England. Hence "pommy" I guess it depends on who you talk to as to whether the term is derogatory. Heck, Americans here like to joke with me about us being a bunch of convicts too. Ah England. The same country that banned the last Aussie Tourism ad because it says "Bloody" - not realising that "bloody" comes from England and is a shortening of "By Our Lady". |

Claim: "Pommy" (or "pom"), a slang term for a British person, comes from the acronym POHM, which was used to designate a "Prisoner of His Majesty." http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/pommy.htm Claim: The word 'f***' derives from an acronymic phrase, either 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' or 'Fornication Under Consent of the King.' http://www.snopes.com/language/acronyms/f***.htm |
