Hey guys. I have a question!

My old man has a 92 Ford Maverick 4.2 litre lwb. It the same model as the GQ patrol!
Question is. Does this model have a limited slip diff at the rear?

He can't find his manual and i can't seem to find anything on google.

Thanks for any info!

If you spin a wheel one way and the other spins the same way = LSD.
One spins opposite of the other is Open.

Another test, jack up one wheel only.
Put car in drive, if car tries to jump off the jack, it's an LSD.
If it just spins the wheel in the air, it's an open diff.

Obviously that method isn't recommended.

Third test: Lay some artwork on the road, dual lines = LSD.
Single Track = Open.

Not overly accurate since if you have alot of torque you can make both leave tracks in an open diff.

Also, f***ed LSD's will slip like an Open Diff.

So in short, there really is no sure fire way of knowing without opening the sucker up, alterantively; they usually have numbers stamped on them, can probably look them up somewhere.

What the f*** is going on in that gif, apart from someone trying to get their foot mutilated by getting it caught in a spinning wheel's arch.

I think it's nF's car, anyway it's trying to get up a steep driveway and because it's low with tight suspension 1 wheel comes off the ground so they're jumping on it trying to get some traction.

I agree with Loki. In 5 years trolling these forums I've seen/read/heard some dumb ass s***, but this takes the motherf***ing cake. Surely having one guy jump *in* the boot, and the other jumping *on* the boot is preferable to dangling your foot in front of the wheel?

boofe: it came from the factory with an LSD but that doesn't mean there's still one in it now - or if there is, that it's still working

easy test to find out if it's LSD is to take the car onto dirt. have your dad turn full lock and drive slowly to the right while you stand just off to the right side of the car watching the rear right wheel. you should see it flick a little dirt up every second or so if it has a working LSD

another easy test is to chock the front wheels on flat ground, jack up one rear wheel and with the truck *in neutral and the handbrake off*, try turning the wheel in the air with your hands. it shouldn't spin freely, there should be somewhere around 50nm or so of torque required to make it slip. noticeably more than just brake pads touching the rotor, but not so much that you can't turn it by hand

another harder test once you know you have an LSD and you wanna make sure it works good is to again jack up one rear wheel on flat hard ground, with a bottle jack or some other jack you can safely drive off, this time don't chock the front wheels. hop in the drivers seat, start her up. put it in first, foot off the brake, ease up the clutch. you should feel it try to move a little bit but fail and then the wheel in the air will spin while you go nowhere. now gently apply the foot brake while giving it just enough gas to prevent it stalling. once the brakes slow down the spinning wheel and cause the LSD clutches to load up, the wheel on the ground should get some drive and you'll pop off the jack.

needless to say, do this test carefully - make sure the jack can be safely driven off and make sure nothing is in front of the car :)

could always take it to some dirt track with washouts somewhere and actually put it through the motions too

there's a lot of different LSD's so you can't just tell by jacking up the rear and spinning one wheel to see if the other wheel spins the opposite way or not. keep in mind too that patrol LSD's are basically the best of any of the common 4by's and because of their 4wd designation are a lot tighter than LSD's in most road cars, even in older models like the GQ

actually it didn't necessarily come from the factory with an LSD, whoever bought it might've optioned it up with a factory locker which means that unless you can find the switch for it and it works, he's got an open diff :)

full set

test fit of a mates wheels on nF's car. Offset was a little big, driveway was unforgiving. Right one got jammed up in the guard and couldnt turn, left one was off the ground and hence couldnt push the car anywhere.

We recruited some fatter people and started pushing and it was all good.
