A WOMAN has died of water intoxication after taking part in a radio station's water-drinking contest.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" competition, trying to win a Nintendo Wii game system.

Sacramento Assistant County Coroner Ed Smith said yesterday a preliminary investigation had found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death".

Busted TV's, black eye's, and now this. When will people learn Wii's are dangerous! No doubt Nintendo will be sued over this.

Nintendo getting sued because a radio station ran a retarded contest? It is America but surely that's a bit of a long stretch.

I doubt Nintendo could be sued over that. If anything it would be the radio station getting sued but then you would think they would have got people to sign something before entering the competition.

That's pretty cool, I didn't know you could get, let alone die from, water intoxication. At least the headline wasn't something like "Nintendo Wii kills woman" or "Wii overdose kills" or something, like this.

Pretty irresponsible of the radio station imo. They should have gotten medical advice before holding a competition like that, and somehow I doubt they did.

I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't get legal advice, which is probably more important to a company in the USA than medical advice! One would think that the legal advice would/should have included getting some medical signoff on that - although I didn't know you could die of water poisoning either.

drinking way too much water decreases the salt levels in your blood. this can lead to comas and in the case of this woman, death.

Don't "E" users/ravers have to watch out for this sort of thing too?

The excess water actually stuffs up the balance of electrolytes in the blood and tissues, especially sodium, which is diluted by the water. The gradient that develops causes water to move across the blood into brain tissue, resulting in brain swelling. This causes headache, nausea, vomiting, seizures and can lead to coma and death, as it obviously did in this case.

Pretty stupid of the radio station to not seek advice before designing this competition - imo they are responsible here.

And yeah, there have been deaths related to Ecstacy use by the same mechanism - drink lots of water, stuff up the balance of salts, and don't go to the toilet as much as they should.

This situation is completely inconsistent with the whole McDonalds lawsuit phenomena where fatties sued due to the fat content of the food.

No one could allege the inherent content of Nintendo's product contributed to the loss incurred by the deceased person i.e. dieing.

My grandad almost killed himself by drinking water.

Fairly elderly at the time (90) and his hearing (and sight) wasn't great.
Anyways the doctor asked him if he was drinking plenty of water ie. 8 glasses a day.

Well he said yes, but he thought the doc said 8 litres a day.
And he didn't really understand what a litre was, not could he read it on the side of a jug so he decided he must have meant 8 jugs of water a day.

He drank so much water that he gave himself a heart attack and congestive heart failure. He had basically filled every part of his body up with water ... You could basically see the water sloshing around under the skin.

oh ... it took him several weeks of drinking 8 jugs a day.

In hindsight he was complaining he needed to go to the dunny alot, we should have gone "hmmm why?" ....

Thats tragic!
I wouldnt have thought twice about entering a competition like this.
I think my only concern would be my muscles not being strong enough to keep the liquids in, not death from too much water.

Yeah, that is why you should also have some sort of salty snacks while on E, or drink gatorade/powerade.
