Topic: Wii Outselling PlayStation 3 in Japan

Yoinked from Slashdot is this article from a Japanese site looking at how the PlayStation 3 is faring in Nippon:
Eating into Sony's sales at home was the unexpected success of Nintendo's Wii gaming system, according to Enterbrain. Nintendo sold 989,118 Wiis domestically from its Dec. 2 launch date to month's end, nearly double Sony's total.
With the Australian release still months away, I'm curious as to how many people are still even looking at the PlayStation 3 given the success of the Wii and Xbox 360 here - how many people out there are thinking about it?

I will get a PS3, just not at launch.

Yeh I'll get one, but not for the launch price. If I could find a Wii for sale I would own one now.

If and when Blu-ray becomes the "new DVD" then I'll probably pick one up. Its just too much money for what is at the moment really only a game console - if I could readily rent Blu-Ray movies it might be a different story.

I'll be getting one.
As fun as wii sports and Zelda are, I cant see there being a whole lot of good 3rd party games for a while if that. I think it will probably be like the N64/Gamecube where the majority of its awesome titles are 1st party games which means its a long time between drinks, even if each one is freakin awesome :)

To me the Wii and ps3 are aimed at 2 totally different demographics. As soon as Sony gets some of its exclusives and even decent cross platform games out its sales will probably increase. 360/PS3 are the sales figures that should be compared in Japan/US if anything.

Edit: they may be a victim of their own success at the moment too, with PS2 games like Final Fantasy 12 only just coming to market and selling so well too.

Most people I've spoke to about it say they would probably get the ps3 if it was cheaper, some of those settled with the wii instead. Everyone baulks at the price tho.

I barely ever play games anymore but i would probably get a ps3 and not a wii. Except i most definitely won't be getting it at launch.

I have never bought a console in my life and generally dislike the idea of a dedicated gaming machine that can't be modified or upgraded much (legally). Having said this, I am considering buying a Wii after trying it out at a friend's place. The feel and approach to gaming is different and fresh .. actually fun!

Though I might just change my mind and get a laptop instead.

the price of the ps3 is majorly offputting

combine that with nintendo doing something new, thats actually fun, and then at half the price

makes it hard to compete

the wii just has sooooo much potential

and we all know that nintendo know games

I couldn't be less interested in on the PS3. I might get one furthur down the line, when MGS4 and maybe a couple of other games I'm interested in come out, and once its cheaper, but for now the XBox 360 and the Wii fill all my "next gen" needs. I didn't expect to be as impressed by the XBox 360 as I was, but its a damn fine piece of hardware, for all of Sony's marketing hype and bluster I've yet to see anything on the PS3 that impresses me as much as what I've played on 360.

no surprise really considering how many more wiis are actually available to buy compared to the PS3

but I won't be getting one for at least 2+ years, when there's more games out to see if it's actually worth getting and when the price has come down considerably

i wont be getting a ps3 cause none of the games interest me, mgs4 looks nice but ive never been a huge fan of the series that much to warrant running out and buying a $1000 console.

Wii60 ftw.

At first I was like 'wtf this is news?'. Sony is doomed against the Wii in Japan what with the software and hardware sales of the DS the past year.

Here is last weeks Japan list of Software sales, it has been like this all year. DS in unstoppable.

Media Create 25/12 - 31/12

1/ Dragon Quest Monsters Joker (NDS, Square-Enix) 593,994
2/ Wii Sports (Wii, Nintendo) 95,479 [566,707]
3/ Wii Play (Wii, Nintendo) 83,487 [522,810]
4/ Common Sense Training (NDS, Nintendo) 72,159 [953,520]

23/ Oshare Majô Love & Berry (NDS, Sega)
24/ Momotarô Densetsu 16 (PS2, Hudson)
25/ Kanji Test (NDS, Rocket Co.)
26/ English Training (NDS, Nintendo)
27/ Kanji Exercise (NDS, Nowpro)
28/ Pokémon Battle Revolution (Wii, Nintendo)
29/ Gundam Seed Destiny Union Vs. ZAFT II + (PS2, Bandai)
30/ Tetris DS (NDS, Nintendo)

DS 18/30
Wii 5/30
PS2 5/30
PSP 2/30

The move for Dragon Quest 9 from PS3 to DS is one of the most industry shaking newspieces of the year. This game is HUGE in Japan, and that new release that is the top spot last week is just a spinoff of DQ.

But yeah, all this is expected due to:

a) Nintendo owning Japanese atm with DS + Wii
b) Price of Wii vs PS3
c) Availability

I get the feeling that the PS3 will make a much better media center than the 360 does and for far less effort. So once they've perfected that and it drops in price i'll unplug my xbmc, buy a HD TV and a PS3 and be happy.

i don't know what blue ray disc is nor do i care. DVD's work fine for my movies, i don't need 100gig of extras s*** on my video disc.

im yet to hear if the ps3 is actually any good, all i hear about is the price

At least Sony can take comfort in the fact they won an Emmy Award for their controller.

yeah the price of the ps3 is f***ed, even the lure of VF5 probably won't make me want to spend that much

probably...

i agree that when that ps3 "media centre" version comes out (which is priced at like $2,500 i think) that will dominate and be way better than the xbox 360 and the wii

"DVD is s***house compared to Blu Ray/HDDVD"

Who gives a s*** it looks fine to me. Maybe if u had 2 super expensive tv's and ran the same movie side by side u might notice the difference, but who puts a new release dvd on and says "oh look at this quality it's terrible". Looks perfect to me. Maybe u porn addicted conosuers see it differently.

The solution for Sony is simple - leak a mod for the PS3 so u can pirate games. Sales will skyrocket.

It is looking like the 360 has spanked both the Wii and the PS3 world wide over the Xmas sales. I guess everyone was just waiting to see what they were offering before committing to MS.

Wont be getting a Wii cause greazy is going to get one sooner or later, just for zelda.

Wont be getting a ps3 cause no arab can afford a $1000 console.

The only thing left is an xbox and i may get that if more games catch my eye like Gears of War and Def Jam 3 but until then i'm happy playing Street Fighter 3 on the xbox, online, woo.

hey man the first hour or 2 of ALL zelda games suck, its just the whole storyline/this is how you play the game. At least finish a dungeon or 2 don't give up on it yet!

als0 ~

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!! lol

billy brought his wii when he came to visit me and yeah it was fun, but i see it only having limited playability for me.. wii sports is good fun, but holy s*** monkey ball or whatever the f*** it was sucked some serious anus and was so unresponsive and s***. i think the only reason i'd get one of these big consoles now is to get online, otherwise i'd just save up for an awesome laptop that i could play half-decent games on.

Enjoy Gears of War on your 8800GTX SLi and DX10.... oh thats right.... YOU CAN'T!

Heres a radical idea, own a good pc AND a next gen console and enjoy twice as many games as you normally would. Its crazy, I know, but it might just work.

I know this sounds totally imfeasible but like, you could just get one of those and venture outside and have a life with the money you'd spend on the second gaming machine!!!!!!!!!11!11!

Most people like other things than just games and have other hobbies/interests to warrant (or have the time to) play 2 machines :|

EB was buying 2nd hand copies of Zelda for 40 dollers.

I was looking at games in EB the other day and was struck with the lack of really good games for the PC. Alot of the great games were for consoles, then I thought, 'you know, it does make alot of sense to make great games for the console over the PC, RIP PC' hehehe.

Target sells out of Wii in 6 minutes

Found that on Digg and it seems to be happening quite regularly across the US.

Totally - there's more demand now than at launch. For example, I lined up at launch with 80 other people at a backwater target 50 miles out from Boston, and luckily made it within the 69 units available.

Today, a friend of mine lined up for the 24 units that were coming in today 5 hours before opening, to find 10 people there already. By the time the doors opened, 100 people were there.

On my way walking to meet him for dinner, I walked past multiple stores full of PS3s available, and signs saying that the Wii is sold out. Apparently there's about 250k PS3's in the channel right now (ie in warehouses, on shelves, in transit), and not enough demand to meet it.

i got my wii on saturday, i went to the city and looked at a few stores, all said they weren't getting any till who knows when. except for EB who were taking 'pre-orders' for their next shipment in march!. luckily my gf did the smart thing and stayed at home and rang around about 20 different stores, ended up having to drive out to beenleigh big W.

when she spoke to them they had two in store, when we got to the counter we grabbed the last one.

so you can get them here if you persevere. (got rap?).

Another blow for PS3

It seems that the PS3 is not only stalling here in the states but, back in Japan as well. Kotaku is reporting that PS3s are stacking up on shelves.

I spent ages looking for mine and finally found it, was a very happy moment for both myself and my gf who had spent 6hrs being dragged through shops.

It took the X360 a good year to get it's first killer app - Gears of War. Give the PS3 a year to get it's one as well.

At the moment though it's understandable why it's not selling that well - it's frickin' expensive and the games are pretty average so far.
