had the same problem..

i reinstalled steam and css / hl2, updated all video drivers and it worked for me.
mind you i did reformat like twice...(f***ed the 1st install fo windows; ha)

also, the easiest way to reinstall without having to decrypt any files is to back up your folder in steam (your account) and just copy and past into the new steam folder when you've installed from cd..

cheers

edit: ^^^ I just copy the entire steam folder to another partition/drive/computer those gcf files are huge.

I had that same lockup/freeze thing when I went from nvidia to ati video card without a format. I installed a clean version of windows and nothing but the ati drivers (none of that bulls*** control center crap) and ati traytools, overclocked the everloving s*** out of my dodgy x1300 and away I went. Playing on 1280x1025 everything on high averaging about 70fps on a 2.4ghz p4 @ 2.7.

As you didn't seem to give us any of your system specs, we can't really help you much. Installed any new software lately?

I can only suggest usual troubleshooting tips

check temps/try pointing deskfan into case
try running just 1 stick of ram/swap which one is running.
take out soundcard

etc

dude - they introduced that crappy antivirus into limewire and similar apps for a reason eh. it's the key indicator telling you to get rid of the software.

that said - this only leaves about 2000 other possible things it could be causing your problem. good luck with that
