New scam doing the rounds at the moment.

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/russian-link-to-alleged-ipod-tv-web-scam/2006/12/19/1166290543861.html

So basically the new 50" HD Plasma I bought for my old man won't turn up :(

$299 was a bargain too :p

Of all the things people can choose to do with their lives, it sad that the best thing these people came up with was, lets take advantage of people and rip them off.

Should be harsh penalties for people who do this kinda thing.

Heardy,
Did you pay for it with a credit card?
If you did, simply inform your bank that you wish to dispute the charges (repudiate) an you'll get your cash back

I think Heardy was being sarcastic about being ripped off.

seriously, anyone who gets scammed by these sorts of deals, deserves it

i also laugh at people who save previous pennys buying stuff off ebay and then get had as well (note, thesse are people who buy off ebay to save money, i dont mind buying stuff off ebay you cant get anywhere else)

WTF are you talking about? There are threads in this very forum about HD TVs selling for sub$1000 from Coles and Aldi, so an internet deal advertised in the press for effectively the same thing (or very close) seems reasonable.

I blame the newspapers for publishing business adverts they didn't confirm were from legitimate businesses. They are supposedly respected mediums and need to put the same token amount of control around their (non-classified) advertising that they give to their letters pages. $16K without an ABN or anything? Next they'll be taking full page adverts in exchange for money in brown paper bags.

I heard about this on the radio & thought to myself anyone dumb enough to think they can get a 42" plasma for $300 is a bloody moron and deserves to be parted with their money. (radio said 42")

http://www.tahoefutures.com/

these guys somehow contacted my father on his mobile phone, who got his number off one of my fathers mates. They lost $10,000 in total after they didn't get paid after they asked for their money(sell the shares). I just looked at the source code and found that the gif in the middle was from a third party site, so I emailed them asking if they knew this company or that they were getting payment off them. They replied with no, they did not, and so far have issued their site with a gif saying something about unauthorised use.

My father has had stocks for many years and these guys sounded legit too him, until they changed their phone numbers and stopped answering phone calls. The police and ASIO are looking into it as there are a lot more people getting scammed everyday.

At least I did something about it.

They must be detectable because after a few months the IT guys at my work (i'm too busy doing cool games related stuff :)) managed to block the stock tip emails.
