Found this story while surfing, should be interesting.
Firefly, Joss Whedon's shortlived but critically acclaimed SF western TV series, will live again in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, a la Star Wars Galaxies or Eve Online, Wired magazine reported. Story |

Firefly makes me cry.
It was so damn, awesomely good. I belive it was too good, the world couldn't handle something of such quality. It would be too hard for anything else to reach that level of greatness. Firefly took one for the team :( Myself and the girly are watching it through again. At least it was easy to collect the entire series :D Maybe they can use some of the MMO funding to make new episodes :D |

I hope it doesn't ruin the franchise though. The Star Wars Online was far from successful (as well as the 3 new movies). As much as I'd love to see new ep's of Firefly, I think they should just let it be.

The Star Wars Online was far from successful That's because they didn't stay pure to the vision, instead they started listening to the fanbois. |

It's certainly an interesting universe to put a MMOG in. Dunno if they'll pull it off though. I'd be afraid to play it in case it spoilt things for me.
I like the idea of a bunch of movies though. No rumours about a follow up to Serenity though... or is there? |

I thought firefly was good because of the quick dialogue and the peoples past etc being explored. Dunno if its universe would be great for an mmo, although I guess with so little episodes being made that the dev team would have alot of license to just create whatever they wanted.

I totally agree. To me the characters are what made firefly great, plus the great special effects, the setting and so forth. O and the no-sound in space thing, I love it!
As for a MMO game, it could work. I'd be thinking something Privateer like. |

The announcement really doesn't mean jack s*** though, they haven't even started designing the game or even have a team assigned to it yet. I've never even heard of these Multiverse guys before and their super dooper MMO technologies that they make such a big deal out of on their site. They go on and on about how they're made up of ex-Netscape employees, and how qualified that makes them to make MMO's, but I dont quite follow that leap of logic.
I think Penny Arcade sums it up the best "All that happened is that some guys I've never heard of licensed some stuff. They are, in effect, announcing that in a few years, they'll have something to announce." last edited by Khel at 23:04:49 17/Dec/06 |

I don't get it, I've seen one ep, something about robbing a train and the movie, I'm still waiting on the awesomeness everyone is talking about. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think it was s***, but it wasn't that good

or you have a mild dislike for both bordering on indifference ;D i saw a few eps of firefly & the movie but it just seemed a really stupid premise to me.
how come they have an interstellar spacecraft but still rely on low slung projectile pistols like cowboys from our past? how do those mutant dudes build & maintain spacecraft when they seem to barely capable of speech? :P |

Been a while since I watched any Firefly stuff, but...
how come they have an interstellar spacecraft but still rely on low slung projectile pistols like cowboys from our past? One of the basic premises of the show is that there is a strong - basically fascist - central government of the inner systems. Here there is a lot of prosperity but extremely tight controls on arms etc. Powerful energy and high-tech weapons exist (see the opening part of the movie where there is a big fight between rebels and the government) but are tightly controlled and considered contrabrand in unauthorised hands. For vaguelly dodgy traders like the Firefly crew its probably more hassle and expense than its worth to carry and acquire that sort of hardware. how do those mutant dudes build & maintain spacecraft when they seem to barely capable of speech? The mutant guys were never really explored that much. They DID do a lot of raiding and s*** in the outer areas so I doubt they'd be building ships, rather stealing and maintaining them from piracy. They have enough sanity to be able to fly space ships, its not stretch to think that there would be some capable of maintenance - its possible that some have a higher degree of sanity and the grunts we saw were peons. |

Actually obes, to correct you, I hate them both. Teen drama is for teenagers, not 20 year olds. Or in your case, 40 year olds. |

how do those mutant dudes build & maintain spacecraft when they seem to barely capable of speech? The Reavers aren't mutants, they're normal people who've gone bats*** crazy. They dont build ships, they jump people travelling along the fringes of their territories and kill everyone on board and take the ship. Also, from the state some of their ships are in, in the series and the movie, I dont think they maintain them at all, I think they just fly them till they fall apart. |

We can kill people a heap of different ways.. how come when it comes to captial punishment hanging and decapitating still get a run ?
So if they wanna run around with a projectile based weapon power to them! |
