I just ordered The Royal Road to Card Magic which is what every single person has recommended for card tricks. It's got all the basics of card control, fake shuffling, glides, cuts, glimpes, double lifts and the junk.

I was looking fora good course (book/dvd, doesn't matter) on XCM or coin sleights, I thought maybe out of the diverse group of QGLers somebody here knows a thing or two about magic.

Well basically I started playing Texas Hold Em at pubs on the free poker nights and was embarassed at not being able to shuffle properly.

So within a few months of having a deck next to the comp, shuffling pretty much all the time non-stop, I have unbelievable card dexterity.

So rather then learn lame tricks, I wanted to put in some real time and effort and learn proper sleight of hand, the real sort of close up magic where people go "what the f***" because you got awesome card control and quick hands... rather then something lame that people can figure out.

Oh, I'm moving into my bro's house soon... he's a massive poker player.

We got the pool table (mmmm felt surface for cards) set up in the lounge room plus massive sets of proper poker chips... it is on for sure :)

...but back on topic :)

Well at the moment I can only do a variety of shuffles at high speed, without looking and talking to them at the same time... while controlling both the 2 top cards and the bottom card.

This allows me to do a variety of simple "pick a card, anycard" tricks convincingly.

I want to learn some XCM though to throw in with this first, so I don't look soo noobish. I've tried learning flourishes, but my cards are too cheap.

Well if you are looking at mostly manipulation then you could have a look at DVDs by Brian Tudor. His stuff is pretty advanced and takes a lot of practice but looks really nice if you can pull it off. I would strongly suggest getting a few packs of "Bicycle" or "Bee" cards though, pretty much any deck I've bought in Brisbane has been useless for flourishes.

As for a complete course, I'd probably go for Card College, it takes you through sleights, flourishes, and performance.

For coin magic, see if you can get a hold of a book called "Bobos Modern Coin Magic" it has pretty much all the basic to advanced coin sleights and is a good starting point for anyone. I would also recommend a dvd called "Jay Sankeys Revolutionary Coin Magic" for coin sleights.

Awesome reply, thanks a lot.

Well at the same time I ordered The Royal Road to Card Magic, I tagged on the Modern Coin Magic because it was getting such good reviews and was only $9 :) So that problem is solved.

Card college was a course recommended alongside RRTCM, I didn't have a decent disposable income... but I'm definetely going to through the 5 books/dvd's in the future.

This generation extreme DVD by Brian Tudor looks crazy :) I'll keep that name locked in the back of my head once I get some decent manipulation skills happening.

I read about special cards used for flourishes and manipulation, even the performers adding special powder or oil, so they glide easier or something. These "bee" and bicycle cards" I'm not quite sure I understand.

I know I have to get good quality cards, but what the :P

Don't worry, I guess they're just a type of specific brand, rather then something special.

Thanks a lot, I'll order a few packs of each :)

Got 1 serious reply in this thread :( Cmon QGL :(

Luckily Tremble recommended 100% of what I needed and the dvd's/books lead me over to the Penguin Magic forums which are absolutely more then I would need in a lifetime.

So cheers :)

Full moon at Brighton on Monday, Bayview hotel at Redcliffe on Tuesday and used to do Belevedere hotel on Wednesday nights but they cancelled it.

I honestly think the Australian Poker League free events are the best night out for the price... nothing to play, get $1000 in chips... buy $5 in drinks you get an extra $500.

Sometimes I'm at the final table, 2.5 hours later off a $5 investment... tis good.

Any decent player doesn't fall for that kind of crap :)

I always go (drive) along, buy a soft drink + bottle of water (over $5 to get the extra chips)... I find that being sober over a bunch of noobs you can absolutely pwn them.

it's just completely random play. like all in QJs? i'll call that 400 preflop raise with 25/50 blinds with 96!!!!

flops like T74 aren't innoculous at all. there is no room for tight efficient poker there at all, you gotta be a gambling retard

it's all odds. poker is not a random game.
