A new version of the VideoLAN Media Player has been released, taking this awesome open source media player to version 0.8.6. Here's the list of changes:
* Support for Windows Media Video 9 and VC-1
* Support for VP5/VP6 and Flash video
* Support for TTA and WavPack Lossless audio
* Much improved H.264 support
* Preliminary DVR-ms, MXF support
* Shoutcast TV support
* Windows unicode fixes
* Apple Remote support
* Apple Fullscreen controller
* Universal Binary
I recently made the change to VLC after getting bored of doing battle with codecs, so I heartily recommend it. Download it locally from AusGamers if you want - they even make a .zip version available if you don't like installers!

I uninstalled VLC the other day. Often it would take about 3 seconds for sound to start playing, the visual would often be all 'pixelly' and corrupted. That may or may not stop half way through. It was probably something to do with my PC's codecs or something, but you know what: I DGAS. It's 2006 and I've got better things to do.

Fixed.

Messing around with codecs is silly and a waste of time when you can just download a player that uses its own local codecs without affecting the rest of your system.

Don't agree? You're either a noob or an elitist :)

I have no knowledge of codecs WHATSOEVER. Defiler is one single codec pack that you install, forget about and can be done with until next time it updates :/

I dunno what youre talking about.

If that's the case then don't call out ignorant bulls*** like:

It's like the Azureus fans who haven't tried anything else ...

Yes and like we've said VLC is one single .exe that you install, forget about and don't have to f*** around with codecs with.

It just 'works'.

Media player classic with nice codecs runs x264 stuff much better than VLC.
Less cpu usage etc etc / no freezing.

Wonder if this will take VLC up a few levels in terms of hd playback now.. hope so..

haha why do people need to get so pissy about e-arguments? I said that I knew nothing about codecs as in, im a pretty average user, not some high-powered elitist like you commented and I find the effort and knowledge required to get MPC working and playing everything just as easy as getting VLC to play things. I also find MPC better than VLC, program wise.

People I know who are huge AV nerds all think that MPC is a better program and dislike VLC so Ill go with their opinion.

Yes they are elitists who would buy something like this or this :)

For general home-play use, you don't need uber custom codecs.
