Hi All
My girlfriend's family have Optus Cable coming through a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Modem. They are in need of a Wireless Router. Does anyone have any experience with running Optus Cable through a wireless router, and what model(s) would you recommend? Obviously something that is pre-configured for Optus Cable would be nice, as I don't want to have to be dicking around with it too much. 108Mb wireless preferred, of course. Cheers ya pack of champions. |

for a wireless router i would recommend the linksys WRT54G. get it modified with DD-WRT firmware and you'll love it.. easy to admin but more features and security than you can poke a stick at. running one myself at home and its awesome.

router is basic... why not try looking for a next door neighbour's unsecured router and leech off that instead

for a wireless router i would recommend the linksys WRT54G. g my friend has a dlink running flawlessly with optus, you just set it to DHCP there's no configuration for optus like there is with telstra and their login client (which is supposed to be getting phased out or so says an email I got). I have a wrt54g (54mbps) and yes, it is bloody fantastic. Piece of piss to admin, you can increase the output power if you're getting crappy signals in another room up to 200mW but you'll need to put extra cooling fans in it for that :) I also have a dlink DI-624s and maybe I'm just used to the wrt interface but I hate dlink's admin pages. They're also quite the noob friendly router with not much control over stuff the wrt has many options for. I also have no ability to telnet/ssh to my dlink router though I believe some dlink's do have that ability. It's also an insecure POS that seems to leave the print server wide open to the entire internet so anyone on the net just needs my IP and the name of the printer and they can print on my printer. The only saving grace is that it is 108mbps and has USB ports so I can print stuff on my usb printer without having my main pc turned on and you can plug USB hard drives into it for makeshift network storage available through a windows share. |
