I saw this tonight and I have to say Christopher Nolan has done it again. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale display some of the finest acting I've seen and the whole movie is a trip. Dark and twisting and awesome

saw it 2 days ago as part of a telstra thing, pritty s*** movie really the hats gave the whole thing away every single twist in that movie was given away way to early in the movie im glad i didnt pay for it.
ok ok the last "Twist" wasnt given away till close the end, but still i think they could have waited a bit longer on that one to cause as soon as you know it you know whats going to happen in the end. last edited by TufNuT at 00:43:07 18/Nov/06 |

I watched that other new one with Hugh jackman and Scarlet Johansen today called Scoop. A Woody Allen movie and it also has that Swearingen dude from Deadwood in it too. Anyway, it was rather average and I think The Prestige will s*** all over it.

Yeh Rev, the secret is that Christian Bale has a brother all along and that's how he does the transporting man trick. Pretty simple, so then Hugh Jackman gets the machine that creates a duplicate of himself, and everytime he does the trick he has to kill himself, while the duplicate continues his life. Easy. Oh, also, Christian Bale kills his wife, because she found out that he had a twin brother, don't be fooled into thinking she committed suicide.

U guys are f'wits - why spoil the movie for people? It's not funny.
Well since the movie has been ruined for everyone now I might as well comment... Once Hugh Jackman has the machine to clone himself...instead of killing himself with every performance, why doesn't he just keep 1 clone and do the trick like christian bale does it? Silly. |

Well seeing that someone has already turned this thread into spoiler city I might as well put me 2 cents in.
This movie is extremely dissappointing. Now, first things first: 1. The acting was excellent ... as you would expect from the stellar cast. 2. The art direction was very good. You really felt like this was 1899. 3. The Cinematography again, very good. Now onto the soul crushing dissappointment: 1. I worked out that Bale had a twin brother about 1/3 of the way into the movie. I expect more from Nolan. He should have concealed the twin brother better than he did. He should have got rid of the lame little hints his wife gave and made 'Mr Fallon's' disguise more convincing. 2. The Nikola Tesla cloning zapper machine subplot was and is a complete insult to the real Nikola Tesla, the audience and the actors. What a load of horse s***! 3. The Premise of the film implied that we the audience were to be decieved and given a revelation at the end of the film. Instead were are given poorly executed 'silent partner' plot and 'pigs might fly' bulls*** ending. 'The Usual Suspects' did it so much better. To sum up, I want my $14 back I feel ripped off. I didnt get what I paid for. I laugh at the ads for this film on the radio 'Someone will be decieved'! Yeah that pretty much means that the audience will be gipped $14. Nolan should be ashamed. |

Whoah, I wanted to make people think that Hugh Jackson and Christen Bale were brothers. I almost wrote "I can't believe that Michael Cain was the Father of Christen Bale and Hugh Jackson" but it was to obvious.

I avoided going into this thread before seeing the movie knowing that there would be a chance that some tard would spoil it for me. Same here but I still think it should be one of the forum rules and the twats who break it should be banned for a week!!! *spoilers*:p Now onto the soul crushing dissappointment: People who write this sorta thing suck. Anyone can "worked out" a whole bunch of ways that the tricks could have worked. Even if you did just pick one way and stuck with it the whole way through, you didn't KNOW how the movie ended. Suck s*** for thinking about the ending too much. 3. The Premise of the film implied that we the audience were to be decieved and given a revelation at the end of the film. Instead were are given poorly executed 'silent partner' plot and 'pigs might fly' bulls*** ending. 'The Usual Suspects' did it so much better. I too didn't like what you refer to as the 'pigs might fly' bit - probably would have prefered real magic. Still the movie delivered exactly what it said it would - you just don't like it:p |

He called his act "The Real Transported Man" and he told his audience he did it using science.
Still it wasn't a transportation device but the way he did it was way more spiffy than Bale. |

Because they are both the same person, that's the whole point of it being a clone. They are two of the same person up to that point in time, with the same agenda; to live the life of Robert Angier. They both knew that he placed the gun there with the intention of killing the spawn, so the first one to grab the gun did it. Borden had every intention of being two people when he cloned himself, so that's what they did. There was nothing stupid about this film. |

The Tesla thing was just a wild goose chase that happened to turn out to be fruitful. Bale was at the tesla convention remember.
Bale used an electric machine in his act once but that was to just give it some more show. I think? And also when they had to discover the chinaman's secret, bale was like "he's not really an old crippled man - he's fit and strong. His entire life is the trick". Which is where he got the idea to use his twin brother and live 1 life. That's how i understood it anyway. |

To me the point of the film was that Borden was capable of the discipline and self-sacrifice to accomplish what Angier couldn't, literally splitting himself in two.
As far as I remember Angier was the only one who thought Borden had a twin brother. Because of his own failure and self-destructive path throughout the film he didn't believe it could be done. The final scene with all of those drowned doubles in the lockers illustrates that perfectly. |

spoiler text to the rescue
It wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be. From all the trailers about "I know what you are" and "he can do what other magicians only dream about, real magic" I figured he was going to be the devil or something. attack of the freaken clones |

since this thread is spoilt already, I have a question, when hugh jackman captured bale's bro and buried him alive, bale agreed and gave hugh jackman the secret to his trick which he wrote down as being tesla. So how does bale know Tesla, and is it because that the brother was actually never a brother but a clone through this machine. I vaguely remember but this bale lad used an electric machine in one of his acts no? Yeah Bale never used a machine. The whole Tesla thing was meant to be a giant goosechase. That's why he had written it in the diary at the end... "Yes, you Angier." But he ended up with his transportation device so he then devised his scheme even including a diary and the same burn. I agree with dais in that the point of the movie, as Angier explained as he was dying, is who had the most passion. Bale had the most passion for the illusion whereas in the end Angier was just after vengeance. In the end he tore up the prestige to the trick he had wanted all along just to send Bale to his death knowing his daughter was with his enemy. The only thing dais is that Angier was actually the only one who didn't believe it was a double. It was Cutter (Caine) who kept saying it was a double but Angier was sure it was magic. And yeah, with regards to making a clone and using him as a double. I think it's because it's not a twin. It's essentially an animal with no memories etc like the real Angier and he was probably too scared not to kill him straight away. He had feelings about killing the clones but was not too guilty as it is essentially just a molecular reproduction of himself, just a copy. Cue a debate on whether clones have feelings and memories which cannot possibly be resolved since clones in movies are rarely born and age properly due to time constraints. The real debate is why didn't the two brothers stick to their own women. If the Borden who loved Sarah always went home to her she wouldn't have killed herself. But I standby the point that each wanted to experience life and not live in hiding all their lives like the Angier double had to essentially. By the way if you can't tell I loved this movie. |

Hugh jackman wasn't killing the clones tho - he was killing himself every time.
Because once he had made a copy of himself, the trapdoor openned and he fell down and drowned, whilst the clone was alive up on the balcony. So he kept copying his copy over and over again. The original hugh jackman died the first time he did the trick on stage and fell thru the floor and drowned. |

The original hugh jackman died the first time he did the trick on stage and fell thru the floor and drowned. The first time he did the trick was when he did it in the basement and he had the pistol there. I guess you have no way of knowing which one was the 'original' and which was the copy though. I agree with dais in that the point of the movie, as Angier explained as he was dying, is who had the most passion. Bale had the most passion for the illusion whereas in the end Angier was just after vengeance.Hmmm, Bale also had some passion for vengeance as well I think - tracking him down at the end to pop a cap in his ass. I thought the difference between the two characters - which was highlighted at the end but not really demonstrated in the movie - in that Angier was in it for the 'expression on their faces' but Borden didn't 'get that' was interesting as well. It wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be. From all the trailers about "I know what you are" and "he can do what other magicians only dream about, real magic" I figured he was going to be the devil or something.Yeh I thought that as well and honestly thinking about it, that's what I was hoping for - some hardcore sorcery shiz to raise it's head. That said though, I thought it was cool how they had this one guy with this awesome, uber trick - and another guy spends his life and his money trying to replicate it, going to Tesla and getting this massive cainer machine made up just to try to better him - and in the end it just turns out to be nothing more complicated than a TWIN BRUTHA! The ironing was delicious. |

um, the REAL irony here is that you think it's 'ironing' instead of irony trog.
there isn't any other irony, at all - not even in this comment which feigns to think you seriously think it's ironing and not irony, or the fact that even with this explanation, someone like clint could come along and think I seriously thought you thought that |

The original hugh jackman died the first time he did the trick on stage and fell thru the floor and drowned. "first time he did the trick ON STAGE" : ) The first time he copied himself and shot himself, he shot his copy, because he left the gun next to him (the original him) so he could shoot himself or his copy if something monged up. I liked how the whole movie was like 1 big magic trick with the 3 stages etc. This was obviously done on purpose and is great writing/directing whatever. And the secret to the movie, like all magic tricks, was something extremely simple. |

It's essentially an animal with no memories etc like the real Angier and he was probably too scared not to kill him straight away. He even says at one stage that he isn't sure if it will be him or his clone that falls into the tank. The clone has all his memories and that is why he kills them by drowning them. After his wife died his collegue tried to console him by telling him that drowning is a painless way to die, at the end of the movie he finds out it isn't. The first time he copied himself and shot himself, he shot his copy, because he left the gun next to him (the original him) so he could shoot himself or his copy if something monged up. While that is what we are led to believe, we don't find out till later that he infact clones himself and kills the clone. He, and we, were told that Tesla had corrected the problems with the machine. |

Yeah I thought at the end he said he never knew if it would be him or not which would die but that he survived it all along. Andy Serkis did give him instructions after they had perfected it so I assumed that he could go through it up to the balcony. Even though it's not a transporter really, it's a duplicator, but that's the only thing I could think of. Still, once you see the cats and the top hats you sure do get a macabre vibe thinking of having to do that trick 100 times.

I remember Tesla saying he still had some problems to work out but then IIRC the next scene was the box just arriving for Angier? |

As if anyone remembers enough details to give a considered answer. So, having seen it once, here are my vague recollections!
Firstly, the clones had all the memories of the original. They were a complete copy. The first time Hugh makes a copy of himself he kills the clone with the prepositioned handgun. I think that is pretty clear, whatever steps into the machine is the orignal and anything that appears in another part of the world is a clone. However, the first time Hugh performs the trick live, the orignal steps into the machine and it is the original that falls through the trapdoor and drowns. He sets up the first trick to in a sense kill himself and hopes that everything will work out. Its why he says that he never knew who it would be that would fall into the tank. Because, he never knew how complete a reproduction it would be. As far as Bale's characters are concerned, when I sat in the movie theatre I just assumed that Bale had done the Tesla thing too and cloned himself. However, he was prepared to share his life as a clone. Which Hugh was never prepared to do. But, im not so sure now because I cant remember enough about the first part of the movie. It could have been a twin. |

I agree with Staggrr.
But it's a twin. That's why Bale had a split personality disorder thing going on and his wife could tell he only loved her on some days. If they were clones they would be exactly the same people etc. The whole tesla thing was just a wild goose chase that happened to turn out to be a good chase. Tesla was purposely vague about what he had made for anyone else because he wanted Hugh jackman's money and didn't want to say "what are u talking about? i never made s***e!". i think... I still reckon it'd be easier living with a clone than kiling yourself every night. |

They were twins, that's why they had to cut his fingers off, to match his brother. The machine cloned people exactly, each angier clone had the the limp, just like the original. If bordon had cloned himself he wouldn't need to cut the clone's fingers off. Remember the conversation scarlett johanssons character had with bordon? something along the lines of "your fingers make you unique, you shouldn't hide them under gloves"

As I understood it he had the clone before he lost his fingers, when he was talking about the new trick he was preparing. With that in mind I think he met his wife after creating the clone, meaning the two of them had different experiences with her and feelings, as they did with Olivia.
Borden's double being a clone as opposed to a twin brother makes more sense to me because it fit in perfectly with the other aspects of the story and what was happening with Angier. There was no elaboration on him having a twin brother dedicated to his every whim, that was just Angier's denial if you ask me. Every communication between Borden and Fallon came off as an inner monologue. Also, I think another possibility regarding the clones is that there may have been no original once someone had been cloned. It could be that simply what was one was then two, they were both the same. Despite what happened with Angier the workings of the machine weren't clarified. |

Same - remember when he first goes to her place he magically appears inside the room? But I reckon, as mentioned, it was a twin and that is why they each loved a different lady. I assume the one that was left in the end was the one that was in love with Scarlet, and the one who was hanged was the one who's wife died. Do you think the wife new about the pair?? From her final dialogue with Bale I thought she must have known. last edited by Hardball, Billy at 15:32:02 28/Nov/06 |

I don't think she knew, I think the confusion and feelings of betrayal are what led her to kill herself. Not letting his wife know what was happening was part of the self-sacrifice. He said to the other one at the jail that he was sorry about her.
