Joystiq have an interesting item looking at how EA are trying to make a buck selling premium content on Xbox Live. Penny Arcade sink their teeth into the issue as well.

I can't remember exactly but I believe there was another game (possibly a different console too) with "extra features" for a fee as well. The problem was that you don't need to download any content at all. It's included in the original game but locked ... which makes it even more dodgy.

If I had an Xbox 360 I'd definately pay for the extra stuff...not! I remember copying EA's stuff back on the C=64 and seeing their big-ass eagle logo come up when loading stuff like California Games and Airborne Ranger. Not that that has anything to do with them trying to rip their customers off now.

In Double Dragon III you could buy baseball bats and nunchucks from the store (from $1 credits) at frequent locations thru the game. Probably would have made it easier!

Blizzard could always do this with WOW, but probably don't want to risk all their phat monthly sub loot. Maybe after the subscriber base drops significantly.
