I know this is old news, but something else that is worthy of specific attention. Keen developers can grab the source code for Quake 2 now, released under the GPL and downloadable from AusGamers Files. Carmack released it with minimal fanfare but his usual prophet-esque words:
I'm sure I will catch some flack about increased cheating after the source release, but there are plenty of Q2 cheats already out there, so you are already in the position of having to trust the other players to a degree. The problem is really only solvable by relying on the community to police itself, because it is a fundamentally unwinnable technical battle to make a completely cheat proof game of this type. Play with your friends.
I know that a lot of server admins (including us) have been copping a lot of flack for the cheating issue in games like Counter-Strike. Online cheating appears to be, more or less, a fact of life these days - do your part to minimise and don't blame people who have nothing to do with it!

But on the other hand: does anyone else feel that we're gonna have some KICKARSE games / mods come of this using the ever-wonderful q2 engine?

I certainly feel that this is a step in the right direction.

I'm thinking real hard but coming out with nothing in the way of games or kickarse mods that came out based on the q1 source, so why would this be any different?

The quake 2 engine is still being used today commercialy. It's also a lot more flexible, and is generally better than the Quake 1 engine.

i don't know why, but for some reason i have always really liked the q2 engine, i think it looks verynice, and for some unexplainable reason it has a ice feel to it.

like i said, i don't knwo why, i just like it. i think it has a really smooth look.

The release of the quake2 source code is a positive thing. Its not like there was much left of the community anyway. This release is going to enhance junior and senior programmers view on how to program games. Yes, yes we will see alot of sweet mods from this and i dont really think that it will bring up some new hacks for other games like half life. Sure it will give hackers ideas but only a small proportion will work because its a different engine.
