Topic: NYE in Europe?
Matt

I'm gonna be backpacking around Europe for 6 weeks starting mid december (and also mid year) but I'm not sure where to spend new years. My sister is going to Scotland so I'm gonna tag along unless there's something huge on. Anyone know of big NYE events/places?

Also, any advice for backpacking Europe over winter? Places to visit? Things to see?

I have this vague recollection of my sister being in Scotland (Edinburgh?) for NYE and having an aight time. I'd probably aim for Paris; I reckon they'd get their party on there at the Eiffel Tower or something in pretty impressive style.

I'll be doing the same thing in mid-January (when ticket prices go cheap :P), and I'd also love some suggestions for wintery things to do.

Thanks guys - I might investigate Scotland a bit more. My sister is buying tickets next weekend so I have to decide before then.

Jonno - hit me up on msn if you want to meet up while over there. I don't start my studies in Denmark until Jan 23rd, I think.

Trog has the right idea.
Originally the wife and i were going to Austria for a few days over NY but ended up deciding to go to Paris for 3 days.
Yes the place IS dirty and the frenchies CAN be rude, but i have been there twice now, going back in about 3 weeks and again for NYE.
Apparently the Champs Elysees is the place to party

Any rudeness of the French is made up by the sheer stunningness of Parisienne wimmen.

Also, I didn't cop any rude Frenchies - everyone was really polite and nice, although I spoke a little more French than the average tourist. If you make it known that you're Australian and not American you'll probably have a better time (though the same is prolly true anywhere you go now).

I had NYE in Edinburgh in 2002/3 and went to Hogmanay, the huge street festival. It was fricking awesome and would strongly recommend it!

its not expensive at all (compared to europe). i had a new years in Norway. Now that was expensive. $100 aussie for a 3km cab ride! (Then had to get one back)

meh, rome isnt much of a pub style party town. lots of cafes and crap. my philiosphy is go to cold places when its cold. go to warm places when its warm.

prague was cool for NYE, but i was with the missus.
norway was awsome, so many hotties, but expensive.

Norway is one of the most expensive places on earth. And depite being there a few times (work) i would not be in a hurry to go back.
I think Prague is better in the summer.
Again trog has it right, make sure you are known to be australian and you will be fine. Can't say much about parisian women, i already live in hot women heaven (sweden)

I am going to the UK for Xmas and will spending New Years getting drunk in London or Scotland. I reckon as long as you aren't where you may usually spend it you will have a ball. Sorry Brisbane but I cant stand the thought of having another New Years here.

Haven't done the Europe thing yet, but Hogmanay seems to be getting rave reviews; might have to go there sometime!

Innsbruck and Edinburgh are the two traditional NYE parties.

I'll be partying at the goth clubs in London for NYE. Hurrah!
