Topic: Dice on Advertising in BF2142

Dice have released some information about their somewhat controversial advertising system in Battlefield 2142:
The in-game advertisement is respectful of players' privacy: it never accesses files not directly related to the game, and it does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, gameplay behaviour or surfing history. As it is an integrated part of Battlefield 2142 and not a separate program, it only runs when the game is running.

Because BF2142 delivers ads by region, the IP address of the player is used to determine the region of the player and helps serve ads by region and language; for instance, a player in Paris will be presented with ads in French. Note that this IP address is not stored on the advertisement server and is not repurposed for other uses.
See the full statement for more information.

So you pay $100 for a game, a very average game. Then, because it isnt already enough, you have to deal with in-game advertisments?

Please, someone correct me and say that you dont have to pay the usual amount fot this game because of the advertisments and not that Dice is Double-Dipping.

Well seeing as the game industry makes more $$ than the movie industry I reckon we will see 'product placement' in games in the future. e.g. Duke Nukem slurping on a cold Budweiser before he throws on his Nike shoes, grabs his Ray Ban sunglasses, hops into he new Toyota Maxitruck.... to go kick some alien arse!

Dont laugh it's on its way.

What, advertising or Duke Nukem Forever?

I believe you on one of these :)

In fairness, I actually work for a company who develops software to create personalised video content/communication/advertising, which can be used in things like this - ingame advertising. Though we go a few steps further than just targetting it by region.

U.S. domestic box office only, does not include dvd sales or overseas revenues and other revenue sources.

@y 4 r u h8; you're not alone in that idea. It's basically one of the oldest form of indy game development around. MUDs, at the least, have been using that method for around 20 years.

Personally I don't care about product placement in-game as long as it's static and hard coded. I simply don't notice crap like that. Even in movies if they're just billboards with nike on it or someone wearing shoes I don't notice it.

The two movies that do stand out in my mind as blatant advertisers are the 3rd blade movie "what's that, it's her IPOD she likes to listen to her IPOD while she fights vampires with her MOTHER f***ING IPOD BUY A f***ING IPOD" scene and iRobot with the converse shoes.

So as long as ads in a game are static pictures on a wall somewhere and not delivered via my internets (hard coded images) then I won't notice them, thus not care.

I am so not interested in advertising ingame. It could be argued that it may even add to the atmosphere of the game I don't want anything utilising bandwidth and if it does, I can guarantee I will be among the first community members which figure out how to block that s***.

I agree with whoop on if it's hardcoded, then I'm ok with it

Spamming gaming??

WHY THE f*** should you still have to put up with some middle-aged tool's brainstorm'd idea of how to shove the next product into your brain before you can afford it OR before they finish it.

Didn't I, Robot have more product placement than any movie ever?

I'm just gonna slam on my JVC stereo while I try on the new vintage 2004 Converse shoes that were just delivered by FEDEX. Once I've done that I'm gonna go fire up my Audi for a ride...

That movie must have been a commercial success before it even hit screens.

Edit:
EA are already one of the biggest video game companies around

You're more right than you realise. EA is the biggest game company in teh world according to old Gatesy's mob (Microsoft 2000)

I wouldn't mind advertising in games as long as it was realistic and within reason and it was used to fund things to benefit the players. There should be no profits made from this advertising, such a thing seems wrong to me.

What your all not realising is that it wasn't a standard ipod. Just a tool to make people think she was deaf so they would think her an easy target...

It was a mic and the smallest surround sound headphones ever invented which amplified all sounds around to enable her to identify where all combat was about her cause vampires make a subliminal noise when they travel at speed she could then hear and thus giving her an edge...

Sheesh..
Sif you'd listen to music when it could hamper you in a deathmatch...
Get a decent surround sound system one day an give it a whirl.
Either that, or literally, think outside the box an come up with your own reasons as to why a movie plot could actually work insted of just bitching about it

I don't want to think during a movie, unless it is supposed to make me think, I'd rather just absorb the moment.

Of course, I couldn't give a f*** if someone listened to their iPod while fighting vampires with a half vampire who can walk in the sun.

Its bloody ridiculous, EA are already one of the biggest video game companies around, and have some of the most popular games in their pockets...being such greedy bastards is disgusting.

And if they want to become a bigger video game company, surely they can achieve that by getting more money?

It's a funny thing. We seem to accept increasingly longer ad breaks on commercial television, and the tv stations going to ad breaks at inconvenient times, yet we get all riled up about a commercial games company implementing ingame advertising technology in a computer game?

Does this ingame advertising randomly take over your entire screen and make you sit through a minute or longer ad or something? Or does it just quietly sit there in some corner of the map on a wall or something, and you can look at it if you choose, or you can ignore it entirely and play the game?

Doesn't cost much to produce a top notch game

I got stuck at this sentence and didn't read the rest.

this can't happen here in Aus strangely

The Australian version of 2142 however lacks the Dynamic Advertising feature [7] as such an act is illegal under the Australian Anti-Spyware bill.

Thats f***ing awesome!
Still not buying the game, but awesome!
Wonder how many people are going to order the game from Australian online companies and get it shipped to their country?
