ok so i am moving haus this weekend coming and i am going to change the network to wireless in the new place. i know i need 3 wireless cards(for my family's computers) and a router, can anyone tell me what brands or specifically which routers are the go atm

also trying to keep it relatively cheap cause dad is paying :p

also what security program should i use? or will the router have security on it so my nextdoor neighbours don't post on qgl that they are using their new neighbours internets for free.

Three of my neighbours have unprotected wireless networks that my flatmates and I have been able to utilise for our DS online gaming... too bad nobody else plays online DS games :(

Netgear WPN824 kicks some serious ass i never had a problem with mine. With security its a simple setting on the router you can enable a pass key that you just put on each pc you want to connect, no hassles at all.

there were alot of problems with older model wireless routers of all brands dropping connections for no reason which was really s***ty for gaming, netgear claim to have fixed this with new signal broadcasting technology (its got 7 freakin antennas you would hope so). As for speeds the further away from the access point you are the slower the speed, im not sure whether this is feature put in place to limit packet loss or if its just the way things are for all routers.

all in all cat5 > wireless. but from my personal experience on the latest model routers (this one in-particualr) the random drop outs are fixed and its totally good for gaming :)

connection was always solid

im not that far from the router either, but my house is asbestos which apparnetly shields signals, but the speed dropping was the final nail in wireless coffin

I've been happy with my wrt54g v2, linksys for the win. It also has a nice open source firmware market out there enabling new features or letting you increase the transmitting power a bit if you get a dodgy signal in one or more rooms depending on the size of the house/placement of the router.

I just got myself a d-link 624S though because I wanted the usb ports on it and 108mbps wireless but it's an insecure piece of s*** leaving the print server open to the entire internet with no way I can find to block that port appart from enabling DMZ and aiming it at a computer that doesn't exist.

for the tl/dr crowd: my linksys win, d-link insecure, others might be different.

I bought a new wireless AP the other day, and the sales / tech guy was raving about a new technology that was gonna be a killer for domestic 802.xx wireless.

Apparently there's a new technology due about now that provides ethernet over your domestic power circuits, maxing at ~94mbit. The interface apparently is via normal ethernet NICs with a cheap converter or something that plugs into a power socket, and routers are about as expensive as wirelsss models.

Any networking gurus got the skinny on it?

I got billion 7401VGP I got two neighbours with protected wireless so i turned up the power gain on mine and they having trouble connecting there wireless at 54mbps heheh

^^ what happens if they change the channel it's on? I should try that with my routers & see of they interfere with each other. I had them sitting next to each other both on ch6 & didn't really see any problems *shrugs*

Get a Netgear Wireless router and some USB Wireless Nics

Cannot go wrong, gaming is fine ( except spook coz he is noobalicious ) and transfers are ok but don't expect blazing speed.

i should add i have netgear wirless nics also

admittedly the dg834 is only 54mps

but it doesnt go anywhere near that speed

pci wireless card's will do?

I'll be upgrading all my APs to enterprise grade DLink 3200s when I move out... no need to look for other models, they're great.

Am currently using domestic grade 2100s.

Can't quite afford the military grade 2700s :)

I have 3 Linksys WRT54Gs connecting my house to my sisters house about 600m down the road. We have Dlink, Netgear, Intel and Broadcomm wireless NICs connecting to those APs without any problem.

In summary, Linksys 4tw.

when setting up your wireless AP.. don't use WEP.. its crap.. 128bit takes me about 5 minutes to crack. WPA2 is prefered.
