I'm not sure why this isn't bigger news, maybe it happens all the time and they just keep it quite. It seems you just need a pass code, and you can double your money:
ATM reprogrammed to give out extra cash

Someone reprogrammed an ATM in Va. Beach to give out extra cash.

Police say a man defeated the security pass code at the ATM at the Crown gas station in the 2400 block of Lynnhaven Parkway in mid-August.

The machine was programmed to disburse $20 bills. So, for example, taking $200 from your account would usually mean you got 10 bills. “The suspect made the ATM believe it was giving $5 bills, but the user was still getting $20s, so a user would end up with four times the amount of cash, but their account would still show only a $200 debit,” explained Va. Beach police spokeswoman Margie Long.

The man left and then returned in a few minutes to remove more money.

The situation went unnoticed by employees for 9 days until a customer notified them about the situation. Store employees then called police.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 5’8” tall with a thin build. At the time of the crime, he was wearing a white T-shirt with writing on the back, dark shorts, dark tennis shoes and a red ball cap. He was in a light tan, four-door car.

I think the suspect is actually best described as a f***ing legend. Anyone know anything about this?

He was a flatout criminal and did the bank out of probably thousands of dollars but he did it in a geeky way so we love him :hugs:

Bah: I don't think the bank gives the service station a comission on every transaction made through their machine just because they have the ATM there

what a f***ing retarded analogy

How are they gonna track you down? It will just show up as a normal transaction. Anyone could have been doubling thier money.

Just like stealing coke from a vending machine is ripping off coca cola right?

Video+time of transaction/hackage.
But the atm card was probably stolen or bank details forged anyway.

That's why it took so long for them to find out, because no one complained for nine days about getting double the money.

I have no sympathy for banks at all. It's like the crack dealer on my street corner got beat up and had his earnings flogged. Cry me a river.

9 days? Thats weird. I've worked on ATM's and they checked up on the end of every day, must be a pretty slack bank.

atm at a gas station != bank, they are just like chip vending machines, owned by some random or the gas station.

Those atm's are also serviced regularly (I use to do that), and they are owned by the banks.

All they have to do is check which bank accounts were withdrawn from at that ATM. And there will be one which is continually withdrawing money.

Not hard!!!

Just going by my experience working on ATM's in Australia.

One thing that always use to piss me off working on those machines in the service stations, some dick head would always come up to me asking what would I do if they tried to rob me?

What the f*** Bah?

The service station fills their own machines with thousands and thousands of dollars of their own money in crisp bills of varying denominations and gives it away then waits around for the bank to pay them back? Is that what happens? I bet they pay for the privilege of connecting to the bank network too.

Hell of a good deal those american banks have going.

I'd look down at the 9mm Jericho 941 I use to carry, look at them, and they'd get the picture.

It would be just like withdrawing cash from the checkout when using eftpos, and yes they charge for the service, they dont do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Oh Bam!

Considering it would be illegal for me to draw my firearm on you until you've done something towards me there wouldn't be alot more I could do.

um.. actually, they might be owned by the banks, but they are serviced by someone else. lots of years ago, a servo at richlands took my cards. i went home and called the common wealth bank about it. they claimed they didnt have a atm at that servo, despite it being branded with all the logos.

So let me get this right... All I need to do is hook up a cable from my laptop to a stolen pin card, take my laptop to any ATM and put the card in, then my hacking program will work out the pin number so I can get EZY MONAY? Sweet... may as well just use it to work out the codes to the actual banks though.

It's now known how the guy did it. This article was on slashdot today. The operator user manuals for ATMs are posted on the internet by companies that sell ATMs and in it they contain the default password as well as instructions for reprogramming the ATMs from the keypad.

Seems the guy walked up, used the default admin password, changed the amount it would distribute then came back with an untraceable pre-paid ATM card and cashed in!
