A demo of the very impressive-looking Company of Heroes has been released, offering the chance to check out this World War 2 RTS. The demo weighs in at an impressive 1.8GB, so if you're going to download it locally you might want to go and make a cuppa while you wait (try the torrent if you're getting slow downloads).

I played the beta so many times over.
This game is going f***ing awesome.
When you zoom right into the troops you would swear you're playing call of duty. The graphics are soooooo much better than any RTS ever before. Amazing stuff.

Grabbing this now just to f*** around in skirmish.

W00T!!!!

EDIT: or not... no iinet mirror yet :(

That reminds me of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines so much, except this looks like it'll be 10 times as fun.

What the hell, I just gave this a bash (comp on normal) and I went out super-raping the map take-over style to begin with to get lots of resources.
Actually it was about half-half as to who owned what.
Anyway, he had fkn tanks and s*** and I was struggling to produce my third basic infantry unit.

So gay, resources are so sloooow even with outposts on em, oh yeah and panzers > fkn american pos tanks.

Yeah no s***.
But my point was that the american tanks are f***ing useless for how much resources they cost/how long it takes to get that manpower back.

It's been shipping from Singapore since Monday just passed.

Note: last week it was saying 'shipping Monday 18th of September'. Now it says 'Shipping'.

ARgh I gave it another go, I was doing ok against the computeR (on normal).
But eventually he just came in with about 4-5 panzer tanks and steamrolled everything just about.
And I don't really udnerstand why but my anti-tank guys refused to fire the bazooka at them which they were doing before which was gay.

The game seriously requires way too much micro-management as the Americans.
You literally need two tanks to every panzer bare minimum, or using sticky bombs which seems to be oh I dunno, strangely 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x more effective since it requires somewhere in the order of a million f***tonnes less frustration in Micro-management requirement.
Infact zerging panzers with just basic rifleman and stickybombing the crap out of them seems to destroy it to pieces and leave all your units perfectly fine which is kinda gay as well.

It might be fun multiplayer but agaisnt the computer its just aids unless you have super-sonic reflexes to co-ordinate 2 units suppressing this enemy unit while this one draws fire from a tank while this one circles around to kill this unit while these ones throw sticky bombs while over in another section your engineers are doing some gay s*** while another set of units is taking over a point but you need to go flank with other units to kill the thing trying to kill them taking that point./

Like I said, it'd be alot more fun lpaying against another person who suffers from the same *cant be everywhere at once doing 9 things at once* unlike the AI.

Does it not have some kind of slowdown/pause feature where you can que up actions you'd never be able to do in real time?

I can't remember what game it was but it was an WWII RTS that was released fairly recently that had the exact thing in slowdown mode which I thought worked really well.

manpower is easy. fuel is the real bitch. drop in some airborn and buy recoiless rifles. they burninate tanks.

Wait for the campaigns...
After playing it, I can understand what people say about a lot of micro management being involved.
That said, it's still an intense gameplay experience an look forward to buying it when it's finally released

For me, this feels like Dawn of War meets Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 (without starfarce) an twice as pretty.
The unit's vocal responses are pretty entertaining (so long as your not a parent with children around who doesn't want to hear a random expletive).
Mileage may vary for some, give it a try if you like RTS style games and are looking for something a little different (in a good way)

Reload! you're right.
Paratroopers with the recoiless rifles own.
Actually that whole Paratrooper command tree is ownage, you don't need tanks or anything but paratroopers when you go that tree :/

This would be one that'd be really interesting multiplayer i think.
I can beat the computer now with those recoiless rifles, and sorta started to get the hang of the MG's placements better as well, didn't realise they had 'AP bursts' either, not that it's very good but still, american tanks seem like such a waste of resources.
At least, that 'Tank buster' Piece of s*** defiantely is. Bust tanks my ass, it gets busted in two seconds :)

just picked up Company of Heroes yesterday and this game is something else. The cinematic scenes introducing the missions are f***ing unbelievable.

So far I have completed DDay, Bocage and Carentan. It's like C&C Generals meets CoD. wow....

I'm not too big on RTS games but I'll definately look into getting this one... been playing the expansion of Dawn of War: Winter Assault lately who are the same makers of CoH and it's been some good fun.

campaign missions are awesome. very well scripted and cinematic at times.
I find myself taking soooo long to complete each mission though. I take a very slow and steady approach to it.
Even more hours of fun I guess!

It really is a shame that there are no Axis missions in the SP campaign.

I guess we're just expected to have to shell out $$$ for the opportunity as an "add-on" or a "expansion" or gods forbid, a "chapter".

Truth be told, I buy RTS games for the chance to play through single player and then enjoy some co-op VS computer (on insano mode) with a couple of mates.

What I wouldn't mind paying for so long as the single player campaign was as enjoyable as it was (and for a fraction of the existing games cost) is a seperate single player game for both Axis and Allies (perhaps even Pacific?). So long as each game was as enjoyable as the other and yet compatible for multiplayer vs other side types. Wasn't there a Naval game which sorta did this - one above surface, and one below?

Those people wishing straight out multiplayer versions could then, again at a fraction of the cost of an overall game, then grab a seperate version which would allow them play as the side of their choice.

Hey, it's just a thought that might be worth pushing through to developers.
C'mon peeps, we're the gamers, lets let em know what we would like to see in games if we're being subjected to paying for content s***...

EDIT: Oh, an when I say fraction, I don't naturally mean a minute one (which most people tend to think of)
I mean a proportionate fraction =)
