Instead of hijacking trog's thread i thought id be nice and start my own

how is the 7300GT in terms of game performance?

the missus' computer is having a spac attack, and i want to do a mobo/cpu/vid card/hard drive/ram upgrade

atm looking at an AM2 3500+, Asus M2V mobo (about 250 for the 2) 200 GB hard drive, 1 GB RAM and a Gigabyte/Asus 7300GT

basically she uses it for email/internet/gaming, atm shes got a radeon9700 and a p4 2.8GHz. is this a decent upgrade to look at? Id want a cheap and effective upgrade for her computer, this will set us back around $600 bucks, which is kinda the max i want to spend

Opinions? any other bang for buck possibilities?

be a gentleman and give her your computer, then take her shopping with the money.

i dont think a 7300GT is much better than a 9700pro ... anyway im using a 9700 pro and still play some of the latest games with no probs so id stick with it

My understanding is that even a 6200 is going to be quicker than the 5700 I have in my system, and that the 7300 trumps the 6200. You can read into that what you want.

ive got an fx5700, shes got a radeon 9600/9800 (cant remember which)

both are around the same performance, a few scans has shown that the 6600gt is better than the 7300, so for 20 bucks more its probably worth it

my main concern is whether the mobo and the cpu are going to be decent enough

i wouldnt bother upgrading as such, if you really think its had it get a new computer but a 2.4ghz p4 + 1.5gb ram + 9700pro is what i got and its fine for games like i said, maybe look if it needs a format or something else that is stuff ing it up

well its just been a lot of things, raid dieing, stuff corrupting

the ide controllers seemed to fry on the last motherboard, after a powersurge with a s***ty powersupply

then i got a new motherboard, and since then it seems the jumpers have f***ed up on her hard drives, which arent the newest around, so id rather look after the lot in one go, rather than patch it together for a while. i guess in a years time or so we may do a bigger upgrade, but at the moment it gets about 2 weeks of life then dies for 2-3 weeks and its just pissing me off :p
