If you have a fileplanet or 3d gamers account, you can now join the closed beta for Battlefield 2142. The download is 1.1 gig and there are no Australian based servers that I've seen so far.

Havent been able to stay connected to a server for more than 3 minutes yet. It keeps crashing back to the desktop. Oh well, its to be expected I guess.

I'll try again tonight as they update server software each Tuesday. Maybe this will make a difference.

Please tell me its just bf2 with futuristic skins.

i've been playing it abit, play on the LA Wolfserver, get the best ping and stay int he longest, got 4 unlocks so far. Unlocks seem piss easy to get.

There is a preview up on atomic gamer.

Seems the sum of it is, BF2 with re-skins and some fancy features. More like a mod then an actual game. Unlocks come fast at first... but they say there are 40 of them to unlock (argh).

They really need to build a new engine from the ground up, it's obvious to everybody it was obviously flawed at the start (similar bugs from 1942 to 2142, you'd think 200 years the bugs would change at least).

The unlocks reward the people willing to play for more hours then casual players. So you'll get say myself who will play a couple hours a week, getting owned by guys with unlocks who play a couple hours per night. It's a FPS not world of warcraft GAHH!

Anyway, I hope a demo will come out before release, or I can try it at somebodies house. I really don't want to pay for it like I did BF2 if it's going to be the same all over.... I was hoping for quake wars for the end of the year... but with that gone, this is the only multiplayer FPS coming out that is at least decent to play.

if you play for any decent clan, prepare to have to specialise a lot - even to the point where you'll probably need 2 accounts, one for clan matches and the other to pub

clan matches will need a few squad leaders with the 3 squad upgrades, and quite a few other specialised items (sniper detector, longer lasting radar blips, defibs, emps etc)

whereas for pubs, you're just gonna wanna have fun - so you'll probably get the more beefy guns/grenades etc

overall, id say bf2 is more fun :/ which is saying a lot - but i guess this is the next best thing for clan gaming until et:qw :( (ie money comps etc)

unless the performance dramatically increases on aussie servers, ill be sticking with bf2 tho - the actual textures dont even seem that great to me in 2142 :/ (where bf2 had awesome detail on tanks etc, 2142 they are just all boring/plain)

FYI, don't expect .au servers for the beta

ill buy the game when its $15 at pizza hut!

no word on demos just yet; still no final release date either, which is a little unusual for an EA game this close to when it was supposed to be out.

I reckon they should stick to classes and shooting stuff. Giving the squad leader some leadership advantages and commander his bits should be all that is needed. Or at least you just choose the stuff yourself without using unlocks (a points system maybe).

I was hoping this would tie me over until Quake Wars... however, it looks worse by the minute.

Been a while since a non-buggy and decent multiplayer fps came out. The fps community seems so disjointed. Ohh well..

Guys I apologize for the extreme delay in getting these servers up. I cant get into the details but please know that everyone here at DICE is not happy that you do not have quality servers to play on.
I appreciate the emails sent and hope I can hang out with you guys on Oceanic servers in the next day or so.
