http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/08/asus_wl700ge_wifi_router.html

The new WL-700gE from Asus is not only a WiFi router, it comes with an internal 160GB hard drive and boasts an extended signal coverage range that is up to three times as wide as other devices in its class. What's more surprising is the inclusion of a BitTorrent client, making the WL-700gE the ultimate router for those who cannot live without BitTorrent. In addition, this amazing router comes with three USB 2.0 ports that further increases your connectivity options. The only thing that might stop anyone from purchasing it would be the high price of $500, but the benefits does make the WL-700gE a tempting proposition.

i want one!

The only thing that even remotely resembled a kickass feature for me would have to be the extended signal range which in itself isn't really anything exciting. The rest is just meh...big deal.

I assume thats US$500 .. for that much bling I could buy reasonbly decent new kit with a stomping huge HDD, install something like ClarkConnect/Smoothwall and have the same functionality except it can be used as a real computer.

No it's not.

The $127 is referring to an unrelated signal-boosting product.

Many people leave their computers on, seeding or downloading torrents while they are at work/uni, etc. Seeing as most people don't turn their router off, why not move BT functionality to the router and save having an extra computer on.

so the reason for the hdd is to store all your downloads off BitTorrent? Is that all?

the bit-torrent part is useless. its aimed at the market for non-tech people wanting to create a small network with a file server without the added cost of a complete server.

I want a d-link DI-624S. It has usb ports that you can plug a hard drive into and is only $155. Doesn't come with bit-torrent clients or a built in hard drive but sifn't just get a usb caddy + hard drive & plug it in.

The point about the hard drive is that it basically gives you a central network file server without having to install and maintain a seperate machine for the purpose.

If you're using wireless as the main network transport transport ... protocol (? that's probably wrong) ... it also reduces the potential for noise loss when connecting to the data store, as it is physically connected to the router (which a seperate file server may not, depending on the location of the router or phone socket).

The idea has some potential - the unit is probably quite neatly self contained and the convenience of having a hundred or so gigs of space on the router may appeal to people who have too much money. It may also be less power-hungry than a full server, possibly replacing two pieces of hardware with a single combined one.

The bit torrent client on the router is just meh.

That USB-drive-to-router thingy sounds better though, as you can better scale the external drives, you're probably stuck with the 160G one for the life of this router.

Read the linked article this time. The other one has external USB ports too, just more price tag.
