I figured I'd throw up a post to offer/ask if anyone wants any benchmarks run over the next few weeks. Our new toy(s) have arrived at work, and it's up to me to determine which is better bang for buck - these babies, or stuff like Opteron 285 blades, Dual Xeon 5060s etc.
http://helix.racetime.com.au/files/zero/25-07-06_1234.jpg But yes. So if anyone would like any figures on the Sun UltraSPARC T1000, I now have my hands on one. Just don't expect turnaround of a few days or anything is all I ask. |

haha.
Yeah yeah </brag> :P No really, I admit these things are uber cool, but I have to get performance figures beyond just what we're intending on using them for (incase they have dual purposes etc). |

what is it 1U rackmount server. Sun UltraSPARC T1 processor. 6 cores @ 1.1GHz per processor, 4 native threads per core, 8GB RAM. Nice and fast for running Java code. There's another beefed up version which comes in a 2U chassis, up to 32GB RAM and has 8 cores per processor running at 1.2GHz. last edited by Raven at 18:29:26 25/Jul/06 |

Geez trog, I thought you'd be one of the few that could appreciate this one!
reload, the box we have at the moment is $8,500, but what we're using it for only needs a max of 2GB of RAM, so if we go with these ones it'll be ~$5,500 each. The 8 core T2000s cost anything from $8k to $12k depending on configuration. Also becuase they're 1U, they're cheap to host with the masses of processing power they provide. They're also extremely low power servers, so we can quite easily put 42 of them in a rack without having to fret about cooling and heat. last edited by Raven at 18:42:44 25/Jul/06 |

will it run cs? Probably not, unless you can find me a SPARC/RISC version of the server for solaris... and if you mean the client, the best graphics you're going to get out of it is text mode :P Kind of tests I was hinting at though were more along the lines of Tomcat, PHP or MySQL load tests. We'll be running JRun on it, pending license costs - if Macromedia consider it to be 6 processors, then that's $8k in license fees per server, in which case we''ll use Tomcat (if these tests go as I expect, we'll be buying 75 of these). last edited by Raven at 18:45:06 25/Jul/06 |

Yeh, that's probably what you'd need to make Java run decently. What do you use it for, a clock? In the JOGL Quake 2 port, they are getting 85-90% of the speed of C/C++. According to the guys doing the port the major slow down remaining is JNI. While I'm a bit of a C and Python fan these days, but for what Java is designed to do it's pretty good. |
