A trailer showing off some of Valve's recently announced Portal has been released, showing off a couple minutes of the action.
Portal is a new type of single player game that changes how players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment in a manner similar to how the Gravity Gun changed our approach to how an object may be leveraged in any given situation.
Download it locally for a peek. The Team Fortress 2 trailer will be available tomorrow.

Haha, WTF??

What is up with that voice. I thought it was trying to rap/sing.

EDIT:

Graphics look nice and the gameplay looks pretty fun too. Something completely different.

I was thinking the other day, when are developers going to get off their ass and think up new ways (..ACTUAL gameplay changes..) to make the FPS genre interesting?

Anyway that was really cool. GG.

without looking at the trailer i cant help but think that they just stole the whole portal idea from prey. gone are the days of innovative gaming my friends

stfu until you watch the vid.

prey's portals were pretty linear ie: just walk through, end up here. or portal appears, bad guy jumps out. wow.

portal looks awesomely dynamic.

this plus TF2 with their next HL2 ep? i am gonna have to say that valve rox

:) The problem is the same old s*** keeps looking better and better and people keep having to buy it for the pretty pictures.

This portal thing looks like it could be quite fun - some of the footage in the clip shows some quite impressive movements on behalf of the player. I like the references to changing the way you think because I think you'd really need to do that before you got good at it. I'd love to see this with multiplayer.

Dude, that trailer rocked. Inspired by Prey I'd imagine, but still awesome nonetheless.

There are some hardware changes being made at the moment that are stopping GA files from working. It is being worked on with alacrity.

That is the indy proof of concept game made by the people who are making portal. Prey was not the first game to come up with thise idea...

This is awesome, and the trailer is hilarious

The potential for puzzles here is pretty amazing, and many of them will be require FPS skills to boot.

wow that looks unreal. would make a great puzzle game and would also be great in fps multiplayer.

Check out this video from the early days of Prey..

http://imhz.com/videos/Prey_E3_1998_IMHz.avi

Using Portals long before anyone else, kind of interesting how they also have objects going through those Portals yet only now in quake4 did someone finally do that (or has someone else done that too?).

Edit: Added Google Video link of same vid

f*** that looks awesome fun, the best part about hl/hl2/ep1 is the ingame puzzles/situations.
I only played the prey demo but the portals in that were a bit dull, maybe theyll expand on it in the full version.

Anyway, that video has me excited about episode2 off steam.

Looks good. It'd be fun to use it with a wii (being able to point and click the portal), but that wouldn't happen (i.e. Valve are too close to Microsoft and I dunno if the wii could pull off the graphics).

I'll be preloading it for sure.

That game look awesome

I was going to buy episode 2 anyway, but this just makes the entire package seem even better! I hope the price doesn't go up though.

I tracked down the game that this was based on, Narbacular Drop, and mirrored it. The official site for it is probably worth a look but it is over its bandwidth limit for now.

The Narbacular Drop thing is pretty interesting; it gives you enough of an idea to see how it would work. It is basically just a proof of concept thing but lets you think about how cool it'd be on a solid engine.

That game looks fun.

Does it remind anyone else of the Golden Years of gaming, where games were games and not just FPS's :D

Sure does Tollaz0r, things are looking good again!
I still see the massive mounts of WW2 games, but people aren't flocking around them as much anymore, the scene is on the up again.
