Bioware RPG. Sci-Fi setting. Open-ended gameplay. That pretty much sums up all of the awesome things about Mass Effect.

Apparently at E3 there were a lot of closed-door previews of this game. People heard of it, but never saw it. Well, only a day or two ago, a 4 minute preview video showing off parts of Mass Effect was released to the masses (lol).

YouTube.com movie.

I'm loving what it's shaping up to be right now. The very brief shots of in-game looked sexy as hell (considering how early on in the piece it is), and the dialogue seems definately a lot more fleshed out than a lot of other RPGs of this size. I really like the cinematic touches that appear when you're speaking to NPCs.

Hahahahaha

So anyway, the dialogue system looks great but hopefully it'll actually be somewhat open ended and not just give the illusion of open endedness like KOTOR did. The facial animation is done pretty well too, but the combat doesn't look that good :(

Surely this doesn't mean that developers have finally come to realise that people ENJOY playing coop games????

Is it single player or multi? I missed it if they mentioned it in the video. Be boring going around by yourself in such a big game.

Aren't they just bots? I haven't seen anything to suggest multiplayer yet.

Guys, it's an RPG. A lot of the time RPGs don't have co-op. I wouldn't hold my breath for a co-op mode.

That looks very tasty indeed.

Some more info I found over at IGN.
Mass Effect
RPG type: Real-time combat (evolution of Jade Empire systems)
Exclusive? Yes (Xbox 360)
Release Date: Winter 2006/2007

From a company like BioWare, who brought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire to the Xbox, we're certainly expecting big things with Mass Effect. From what we've seen so far, it seems like BioWare's latest may actually eclipse past efforts. As Commander Sheperd, players operate from their home base on a massive 30 mile long ship called Citadel, venturing across a vast galaxy, exploring planets and completing missions. While we know little of the actual story, we do know Sheperd will have access to his own ship to pick through the stars. An easy to use interface allows players to browse systems, check out planet statistics, and almost immediately land on the surface to rove around in a six wheeled land vehicle. As a nice bonus, the vehicle can actually be upgraded with weapons to fend off any curious local life. The game promises a more intuitive conversation system, lots of customizable armor and weapons, and tons of explorable content. Most interesting was the combat system we briefly saw at E3. BioWare's focusing on real-time ranged combat this time. Two teammates can be deployed strategically into the battlefield, but players will actually have to aim and shoot to successfully hit targets regardless of statistical strength. Magical attacks will be available as well. More interesting than the rest are the destructible environments. Exactly to what extent structures can be crumbled for tactical benefit is unclear, but BioWare demonstrated certain bridges could be brought down on enemy heads. The first part of a planned trilogy on the Xbox 360, Mass Effect is one of the biggest upcoming games on the system, and one we're extremely excited about. Oh, and it's got some of the best graphics we've seen so far.

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Did anyone else notice how the ingame footage showed no aiming at all? I mean the curser didnt move up or down once from what I saw, just side to side.

KOTOR was a great game, but you where constantly battling against the gayness of console designed interfaces. I played KOTOR on both PC and XBOX and it felt a lot more natural on XBOX. The only reason I played it on PC was because of the awesome story line.

It looks like I'm getting a 360.

Vertical aiming on a console sucks massive cock. Hell, even horizontal aiming is a bit transgenderish. The real sell of this game will be it's story and interactions. If those two elements are awesome, who will really give a f*** about aiming?
