Topic: World Cup 2010 in Australia?

There are rumours going around that the 2010 World Cup might be relocated to Australia due to problems in Africa such as "high levels of violent crime, inadequate public transport, widespread AIDS infection and a general lack of readiness".

FIFA appear to be denying it so far but it'll be interesting to see what happens. After seeing first hand in Germany the sort of infrastructure and organisation they had to make it all happen I can totally believe that smaller nations would struggle getting it all sorted out.

how many stadiums do you need to run a world cup? we'd have enough wouldnt we?

Well Germany had 12 stadiums in 12 cities - not all of them were massive, some of them were only 40,000-50,000 capacity. We'd presumably have to double up quite a bit (ie, have more games in each city).

how many stadiums do you need to run a world cup?

My cousin (who is a pretty big football fan) was telling me the country requires 10 stadiums which can fit, I *think* he said 40k+ people.

we'd have enough wouldnt we?

Unfortunately, we have 8. However, it would be pretty simple to get a couple more knocked up by then.

edit:
Going off Austadium stats
VIC = MCG = 100,000
NSW = Telstra Stadium = 83,500
VIC = Telstra Dom = 56,350
QLD = Suncorp Stadium = 52,500
SA = AAMI stadium = 51,000 but would really suck as the field would be miles away
NSW = SCG = 44,000
WA = Subiaco = 42,900
NSW = Aussie Stadium = 42,000
QLD = Gabba = 42,000
(Thats 9, but I doubt you'd count AAMI stadium)
Like it was mentioned above, Germany had 12 stadiums in 12 different cities. We have 8 or 9 in 3.

well SA was required to have 13 stadiums and thats been reduced to 10 now ... so we could definitely handle a number like that, dont forget the gold coast is gettnig their stadium too which i assume would be up by then (titans stadium? cant remember finish date for that)

Why wouldn't ANZ stadium be on that list?

I think your statistics are a bit old, cause the gabba holds way more than 42,000 now.

ANZ stadium holds more than the gabba yes, but its in a worse state than aami stadium.

I'm surprised why Australia didn't put in the bid for to host the world cup. Or did we bid but, didn't win?

We should bid for the 2014 worldcup

I thought the whole thing was australia was bidding for the 2018 worldcup, cos we dont have the stadiums and we couldnt have them approved/built by 2014. Let alone 2010.

Time for Canberra to get a real stadium imo!

Or we could co-host with NZ ... they could have a single group.

I think FIFA knows which regions it wants to hold world cups in on a rotation basis (first heard about this was during or after Japan/Korea).
2002 - Asia
2006 - Europe
2010 - Africa
2014 - South America I think?
2018 - Maybe the soonest we can get it as part of Oceania or Asia?

From Wikipedia
After the 1958 FIFA World Cup, to avoid any future boycotts or controversy, FIFA began a pattern of alternation between the Americas and Europe, which continued until the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The 2002 FIFA World Cup (hosted jointly by Japan and Korea) was the first one held in Asia, and in 2010, South Africa will become the first African nation to host the World Cup.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup was allocated to South America in 2003, allowing the ten member nations of CONMEBOL to bid in order to host. However, after a short period of time, every nation in the continent backed Brazil as the only viable host of the 2014 finals, creating the odd situation where the 2014 World Cup host was unofficially determined. However, it is not yet certain that Brazil will be able to host the competition; if the Brazilians pull out, the tournament will be moved to another continent. Recently, FIFA president Sepp Blatter indicated that Brazil is "almost certain to be the hosts of the 2014 World Cup."

Europe may have more countries playing in the world cup, but up until this final South America will have more titles (9 vs 8 - about to become 9 vs 9) so it isn't all about Europe.

Huh? I meant the last WC was in Japan/South Korea, and everyone seemed to have an aight time there.
If neither had happened it would still have gone to overtime and then to a penalty shoot-out which could of gone either way.
This reminds me of the time Italy cheated and got into the World Cup final.... man, Australia totally would have won the cup if it wasn't for them and the stupid ref.

Trog, I think you're a cainer, I deleted my post because I knew you'd have a teary over it... stop being such a god-damned douche.

Thats just like saying, "Australia would have beaten Japan 4-1 if it wasnt for the ref blowing full-time". You just... DONT KNOW what would have happened. Stop being so damn naive.

Why would I call myself a wanker?
I always admitted Italy took a dive, and the ref made a bad decision, but its part of the game. If the shoe was on the other foot, harry kewell would of done the same thing. To say Australia would have won, is just retarded talk, speculation and hyperthetical. It's far from fact.

Not to mention the fact that, if it wasn't for the italians in the australian team, australia wouldnt have even gone to the world cup in the first place.

yeah i know that .. i mean if thiery henry didnt get fowled/theatrical dive last night france might have not gone through against portugal but that still doesnt mean the portugese wouldnt be pissed off at the french for that, its just hate nothing wrong with that

European nations argue the finals should return to that continent every three tournaments, with South Africa and the Americas to be hosts in 2010 and 2014.

"It would be a logical turn that the competition goes back to Asia and Oceania (after that)," Blatter said.

"If we have to maintain the rotation system then I would say Australia, yes, because they have the ability to organise the World Cup, I'm sure that it would be a very good organiser of the FIFA World Cup."

"Where they could come in as a bidder together with the Asian Football Confederation would be for 2018 but then definitely for 2022. The next step will be made in 2008 depending on the presidency of FIFA."

If Australia does get the world cup it just means we'll have to endure the Soceroo's bandwagon yet again. I'm still amazed at how many people turned into fanatic Soccer fans over night.

If the bandwagon comes round enough then in might actually become a permanent fixture in our sporting culture.

endure the socceroos bandwagon?

Yeah its terrible when a country gets behind a national sporting team. I'm sure the socceroos would have prefered to be viewed by a smaller audience and recieve less recognition than they otherwise would have just so people can feel special being a minority who follow football. I thought it was great being able to rock into work every morning, discuss the games shown the night before and have people actually aware of it being on.

besides as if you wouldnt follow the world cup or major football league competitions anyway?

I've always gone for italy. If they werent in the world cup i'd be the first person to start going for australia, this is where I was born and bread. I don't watch AFL nor do I really like it, but it still pisses me off when the lions lose, and it still makes me happy when the lions win.

It's a patriotic thing.

Im pretty sure you need 6 stadiums above 40 k that are football pitch shaped ie suncorp stadium and another 2 that are above 60k that don't need to be football pitch shaped. As far as I can tell they all need to be in separate towns too.

I don't think we have the population base to make use of stadia that size in many of the smaller cities and towns they would need to be built in, so to have it here would seem a waste of money. I'd rather see the money on trying to get the a-league to being the premier competition in asia and/or developing better australian players.

Plus its always more fun being an away fan than it is a home fan.

If you include NZ (which is close enough really), you'd only need 1 new or increased capacity stadium.

Melbourne Cricket Ground 100,000
Telstra Stadium 83,500
Telstra Dome 56,347
Suncorp Stadium 52,500
AAMI Stadium 51,515
Queensland Sport and Athletic Centre 48,400
Sydney Cricket Ground 44,000
Subiaco Oval 42,922
Aussie Stadium 42,000
Gabba 42,000
Eden Park (NZ)45,472

thats hardly one stadium per city :P
we can't share with nz because they are in a difference confederation
don't forget the world cup would have to be now and all those stadia be used purely for the world cup so all the other sports that use those grounds during june/july would have to go on hold

Ease up tiger. Since you have no idea what you're talking about, I will assume you're referring to Christian Vieri. He was NOT born in Australia, only spent his primary schooling here, and never once played football for Australia.

He was also not the leading goal scorer in 1994, that was Baggio.

L2Fire up.
