Hey guys, I'm up in Yeppoon doing some repairs on my old man's computer. He needs a few bits and pieces to be upgraded, ram/hdd. Can you guys give me any suggestions of decent places to go?
Also is there anywhere you guys can recommend to pick up a cheap 2nd hand 17"crt? His has just about had it. I know back in Adelaide where I could pick them up for under $50. I'm obviously looking for places around yeppoon/rockhampton. |

a 2sec google found this place: http://www.cqcr.com.au/0-used.html - they do 2nd hand computers but it might be worth giving them a ring and finding out if they have any monitors.
google "2nd hand computer parts rockhampton" had a few hits there. Or try yellow pages? |

thanks Bah, that was my point.
To all the other so far, yes I am well aware that "google is my friend". I have googled, and yellowpaged computer stores in the area. My thought was to hopefully find someone with some local knowledge and recommendations. |

So you want to pay less than $50 bucks for a 17' monitor, and expect it not to be dodgy?
Its a game of russian roulette, you could get a good one or you could get a bad one! If any shop was selling "reconditioned" stuff then id be pretty dodgy on it. Some of the shops i saw were selling ex-government stuff which is sometimes ok. There are some big auctions in brisbane for ex-gov stuff but its often a mixed bag - some pretty good gear and a few duds (which you can usually tell if they are duds or not). Googling wont tell him if the store is dodgy or not. Not defending gamedude or anything here....but they are still in business, which indicates that not all of their products are s*** - their problem is more of their products are dodgy than other stores and their return policy is s***. |

$50 for a 17" CRT isn't "dodgy" IF you know where to look.
2nd hand that is all you'd be lucky to get for them down in adelaide, once again IF you know where to look. The Valhalla Lan forums in adelaide is FULL of tight ass people, so you can pick up a heap of bargins, if your local, and depending on what you want. I also came across a couple of game rental places that have just upgraded their monitors to LCD's, so they had a some 17" CRT's for sale for $25. Back home I'd know where to go, to pick up stuff in resonable condition at good prices. I also know the places to avoid like the plague. That was the sort of thing I was hoping to find here, some local knowledge. Posting here was just a shot in the dark, I've got to pick the stuff up tomorrow, so looks like I'll just have to take my chances. thanks anyway. |

Tufnut, you have no clue. If getting ripped off on the 2nd hand scene means I'd live in a "real city" you can keep it.
I'm not bitching, I'm on a time contraint. Visiting my old man and trying to get his computer together before flying out. Using wonderful "overnight" delivery was NOT an option. He's not a leet gamer, so he doesn't need 4ms LCD, or ram and a processor that I can overclock the tits off. I was hoping to find a USEFUL local lan page (like valhala) that would have bargins on it that you might point me too for 2nd hand monitors. Or LOCAL shops no futher than Rockhampton. See, the old man is partially blind, and is getting on in years and lives by himself. LOCAL places are his only hope if something goes wrong. Asking him to try and remove the RAM/HDD/Processor and post it back to www.theshop.com just ain't gonna happen if s*** hits the fan. BUT he could disconnect everything, take the bus to a store and get them to do it, should there be problems. Thanks anyway.......I've picked up the stuff I needed and put it all together. |
