Hey. I'm planning a trip over to thailand in January. Just wondering if anyone has been to south east asia and if you have any recommendations on places to travel and see there.
Possibly thinking about flying over to paris, spain etc. That's a big maybe though. Any stories/ advice would be much appreciated. Thanks :) |

The humidity in bangkok (and I think most of Thailand) is 100% all the god damn time. Its sticky, the air smells bad(I really do mean this), the food is s***, the people try and rip you off as soon as they know you are from the outside, there are pickpocketers. Apart from that its cheap. I suggest somewhere else, like... NZ or maybe even a country in the further up north of the world.
Edited for hatred. last edited by Greazy at 16:47:43 02/Jun/06 |

If you're going to be in Bangcock go to MBK and (pantip/pantrip markets?) i think its called. Electronics aren't cheap there by any means although generally speaking clothing, transport, food (and punani)is and in abundance.
Haggling will take you a long way cause as soon as they see you're a tourist you're going to get reamed price wise, so start chopping up their prices in halves and walking away when you dont like it and watch some of them run after you. I bought like 5 authentic diesel shirts for something like under 10 bux. When you hopp in a cab get them to use the meter otherwise they'll throw some bulls*** price at you. Always tell them to take you the shortest way and try and aviod going through any toll bridges. Even if you do get taken through a toll bridge make sure you know what the toll fee is. I cant remember what the fee last time i was taken through a toll (i think it was 20 bahts) but the prick of a taxi driver handed the money and at the end demanded something like 70 bahts for the toll. He didn't get too far trying to ripp off a bunch of arabs that's for sure. "nooooooo noooooo i said swenty not seventy..... fly lice duma!!!" Well his T's were fine any other time the munyak. Weather there is stinking humid and the air is filthy as s***. Not sure of what their food is like mainly because i wasn't sure just what the hell was in there. Some mushy mushy s*** with wild pig soup or some jazz. Beware of all the fakees and the theives and avoid catching the bird flue. last edited by Booyah at 17:21:17 02/Jun/06 |

dont put any dodgy stuff in your boogy board
thailand is pretty :S I reckon too, I'd probably prefer to go to Vietnam or Korea if you must go Asia, round the world tickets from flight centre with Star Alliance are the way to go as well if you want to visit a few places. They usualy tell you you have so many miles and so many stops youre allowed to do but you can get them changed at any participating travel agent when youre travelling and they dont even check teh mileage. |

well the reason i am going to thailand is because i am accompanying a couple of my mates who are muay thai kickboxers who train over there on the island Kosamuai ( actually i am not sure how the hell you spell it and can't be bothered goggling)but yeh. I'm gunna head over with them but me and a friend are going off by ourselves to have a look around. Over there for about a month i think.
Thanks so far. It's nice to hear from people who are more experienced than myself. |

My sis was overthere about 6 weeks ago and staying with a friend who works at the UN.
Probably the most important thing, as has been mentioned above. As soon as your spotted as a tourist you will be almost expected to pay much more then what a local would pay. Any price thrown at you, half it at the least. |

I was in Thailand once.
I went back only to feel bitter and jaded. True story. |

Oh and just on the cabbies in thailand matter, make sure you tell them to get you straight to your destination and not a tour around south east asia. One cabby that always used to sit outside our hotel (Ebina House Hotel) told us that the markets that we wanted to get to supposedly werent open at the time and told us he'll take us to some government place in la la land. Lieing sack of s*** he was. You learn a lot in 6 days.

lol yeh - everyone i know who has been has grand tales of being severely ripped off within the first 24 hours after landing. Usually within the first 3 hours which i find most amusing but understandable. I guess i'll probably have to learn that one for myself despite all of your warnings.

i suggest if your friends are considering going to a muay thai camp to train, i suggest they check there reality at the door, cos they'll be in for a f***ing rude shock.
people fight to live there, and kids are raised to try and win money to hold their families together, it's f***ed and the MT camps are hard as a f***ing rock. but all the best to them |

Ow don;t worry they have been before. They are more than aware of what training is about. One is in Thailand at the moment. When last in thailand she was selected for the Australian team and is back over there now fighting in the ameature world tournament for Australia. Her first fight was last night i think. Haven't heard how she has done yet but i suspect she'll get pretty high up in the ladder. We're aiming for gold but happy with silver :P

I lived there for 5 years, depends what sorta s*** you wanna see bangkok has all the touristy s*** you wanna see, but if you wanna look at ruins and that sorta s*** you should check out sukothai and ayutayah.
Chiang Mai and floating markets and the rose garden are also pretty cool. should check out chatuchak markets, see some pretty amazing s***, like they sell monkeys and baby crodocodiles but heaps of clothes and s***, pretty massive. also look at penang markets, not that mainstream but they've got a lot of ps2 s*** and some clothes and other random s*** like watches and whatever. could go on forever but i really cant be bothered... |

When i went to thailand i was just in bangkok, sure its hot and humid, but its f***ing fantastic, food is excellant, i had a great time.
I suppose if your a close minded assface you could have a bad time. Edit: to be more helpful, booyah is pretty much on the mark, everything he said is good, try to only drink bottled water as well. And check out the massive markets. MBK is so great, i got lost in there for ages. last edited by Viper119 at 23:22:37 09/Jun/06 |
