LG have one out now actually, Harvey Norman have them for between$900-&1200. I have the lates Sony 'Pulse' member magazine and they have a nice Sony listed that will do any and all upscaling or downscaling as required. Not sure if they are here yet tho...I'd wait a bit and see what the other big players release. I have two DVD recorder, both Panasonic and they are excellent machine. although when I bought them they didnt do PAL progressive so I also got a Sony purely for playing stuff in PAL progressive, but I now notice the later model Panasonic stuff now does PAL progressive as well. The image quality of both these brands in excellent played on HDTV...waste of time getting a HD recorder if your going to display it on crap.

making a normal dvd into an hd dvd is just going to upscale it, like taking a jpeg in photoshop and hitting enlarge.

as for 1080p, most television sets can't display that, even tv sets that are advertised as 1080p actually only accept 720p/1080i signal and upconvert it

As much as I hate Sony, I tend to find BluRay more appealing. But the price they're asking for players is utter extortion, so for that reason I'll be sticking with DVD for a long time to come (I'm happy watching DVDs on a 20" iMac, it's not like I own a 42" Bravia).

Is there a particular reason you would want to buy HD-DVD over BluRay?

as for 1080p

1080p is an utter bitch. I did some tests (using Final Cut Pro) rendering some of the stuff we do at work in 1080p (1080 x 1440 (animorphic) x 60fps), and by god it takes ages compared to DV-PAL.
