Nintendo just unveiled the proper name for the Revoultion.

Introducing... Wii.

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that seperates videogame players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people playing it. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of videogames that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.

Most reactions to the name so far have been less than warm.

I first read it as a "why" sound, but after reading the press release I can't help but think Nintendo Urine. The name revolution was much better suited imo.

Just keep calling it revolution then, who cares what nintendo marketing wants to call it.

I like the logo, but the name is a joke. Revolution was heaps better.

The new logo and identity (they have SHOOTING in the trailer linked here and the graphic design is really neat) are really really cool, and I'm sure the name will grow on me - but I don't think I'll ever forgive Nintendo for the inevitable puns that will come of this.

I wasn't interested before hand, but now I'm disinterested because it has had a pretty lame name change. With the exception of the Matrix movie, Revolution is much cooler.

Well, looks like those guys at nintendo marketing have got it right. People may not like the name, but they're definately taking notice.

eXemplar is right - people are making a fuss of the name and are basically advertising the Wii on Nintendo's behalf. I for one don't care what the name is, I want one because it'll most likely be an awesome experience, plus I can get all the games I fell in love with back in the 90s.

There was speculation on some nameless gaming blogs that this was just a marketing gimmick and that the real name is to be announced at E3, the reasoning behind that there's that there's two logical reasons they'd drop a bombshell like this now instead of at E3: So they could generate some attention because of the name connotations, and to let people get the f*** over the name connotations they unveil the playable games and stuff - and both reasons point to Nintendo knowing it's a pretty stupid name. Also, no records can be found of "Wii" based trademarks as yet. Nintendo says they've filed trademarks though, and these fanboys are probably just in denial.

I'm not a fanboy by the way. The term 'kiddy console' or 'kiddy game' angers me outside of the realm of 'Dora the Explorer' though.
